I'm not saying it's impossible, but a lot of things that bring life back to these areas are not places that many people in Utah County or small Utah towns want, and that's just the reality whether people want to admit it or not.

A quick goggle search revealed that Payson does in fact have a bar on main street if thats one of the things you're referring to by cultural attractions. Not all of course, but the majority of small towns in America tend to be more conservative and religious. This is not unique to Utah. The reality is the decline of small town America is far bigger than any one group or church. As someone who has seen many small towns across this country I can tell you first hand that the majority of small towns in Utah are actually doing pretty well.

Online shopping and big box stores are a big factor in the decline of small town business districts. Many have had to reinvent themselves to survive. Another set back to a number of small Utah towns years ago was the expansion of i15. Instead of going directly through town it now bypassed them. New hurdles now exist, but overall I feel like many small towns have been making good progress towards preservation, activation, and beautification.

Even better than the article was the actual use of a current SLC photo. I always cringe whenever I see an article about SLC using a photo that appears to be a couple decades old lol.

To be fair, to the layman Salt Lake didn’t look much different 20 years ago.

Grew up in Heber. Way different now than when I lived there, but loved it

I found a pic of Heber Valley that's giving me a major bout of Utah homesickness. I posted it over on the SLCMSA Thread.

If you could extract Minneapolis and its burbs out of the twin cities, I’d bet St. Paul would possibly be a comparable city to Salt Lake City.

If you're in LA you've got some amazing areas nearby in SoCaol. You're not too far from Temecula Valley. Between the vineyards, old town area, the mountains, and incredible year-round weather that is one helluva a valley imo. Heber is nice too but you've got some really awesome areas in SoCal too that have a lot of cool things going on.

I was too young to enjoy the 2002 Winter Olympics and will probably be too old to enjoy the 2034 Winter Olympics.

There is a 95+% chance that SLC will be awarded the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics. The IOC has already stated that they will be awarding both years to the same city. SLC is the only one vying for 2034 and there is only 1 competitor for 2030 and they won't have a formalized agreement for at least 18 months. The announcement of the host for 2030 and 2034 is tentatively set for July 2024 right before the Paris Summer Olympics start.

SLC pushed against 2030 due to lack of sponsorships as L.A. has the 2028 Summer games and that is the focus for the USOC. Getting both 2030 and 2034 helps to cover some of the sponsorship loss. It also means the likelihood of a bigger Olympic investment from both the State and Feds.

We could see increased funding for transit infrastructure, maybe the Rio Grande Plan mostly paid for by the Feds. We will also see an increase in housing at the U, Olympic Village housing will become student housing.

It would also mean additional hotels and I would expect apartments for SLC as many athletes would move to the SLC area to train for both 2030 and 2034.

The economic impact of back to back Olympics is something that isn't really known yet as it hasn't happened in the modern era and to my knowledge, never for the Winter Games.

Exciting times are ahead if everything happens the way it looks to happen.

We'll get 2034, not 2030 though.

IOC ratifies recommendation to award 2030, 2034 Winter Games to same city

Quote:
MUMBAI, India — The International Olympic Committee ratified the recommendation that could lead to Salt Lake City hosting the 2030 and 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in their 141st IOC session Sunday.

In his presentation to the members of the IOC, Future Host Commission Chair Karl Stoss outlined a number of benefits of awarding both the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympic Games to the same city, chief of which was having a secure and climate-reliable location set for both games in advance.
It is this article and others like it, as well as those stating that 2034 has only 1 city vying for it (SLC) and only 1 city is ready to host 2030 (SLC), that leads me and many others to reasonably feel that SLC will be awarded both 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympics.

WOW...I had pretty much expected that we would get the 2034 games but I wasn't expecting both 2030 & 34. Unless another player city/province/nation with the huge difficulties they would have to surmount enters the picture it could very well be a reasonable expectation. As of recently the only other serious player still in the game so far for 2034 was Japan and they were a very distant second.

China and Russia at one time could have been viable opportunities but unless conditions change dramatically it will be a long time before the free world will consider them anything other than a paria.

Edit: Another condition that the Olympic committee is trying to avoid if at all possible is spreading out the games in too broad an area. This is where Salt Lake City excels with its incomparable concentration of world-class venues all within a very convenient distance from a major metro and world-class airport. When different proposals were forwarded such as Reno/Tahoe/California or even a multi-regional/national games combining different U.S. States such as Colorado and Utah, different European Provinces, and even entirely different Countries, the Olympic organizers balked and stood firmly against it and only to be considered as a last resort.

The article has apparently been updated. Here is the quote:

"At the 141st IOC session Sunday, Future Host Commission Chair Karl Stoss outlined a number of benefits of awarding both the 2030 and 2034 Winter Olympic Games at the same time.

The main reason was having a secure and climate-reliable location set for both games in advance."

I don't think they are suggesting the same city will host both. Just that both 2030 and 2034 will be announced at the same time

It's my understanding that Sweden, Switzerland, France and Salt Lake City are the current bidders for 2030. Not sure if more bidders will be come forward, but as mentioned Salt Lake City is currently the only city in the running for 2034. SLC has made it very clear they prefer 2034.

I could easily be wrong, but unless their bids completely fall apart, I think either Sweden, Switzerland or France will host 2030, and Salt Lake City will host 2034.

Damn, it's still crazy to me to be planning things in the mid 2030s, I get it and all but that is 32 years since the last one. Sheesh, I'm getting old.

Am I the only person asking why no other cities are vying to host? Coming in first place out of a race with nobody else seems odd to me. Maybe there's perfectly good reasons, I've not been tracking this close at all.
