and that's fine.

But when — goes south because of a faulty aircraft, the airline is responsible and needs to pay up. It's as simple as that.

I'm ready and willing to pay more for that privilege right.

The policies come with trade offss.
But the one thing people don't get it will have to push the airlines to be more efficient. Yes its a new cost. But airlines still don't want it incurred.

WestJet drops Montreal - Toronto all together.
Sure it was just once a day, but still fairly surprising.

Indeed as much as it follows their new strategy it's hard not to find the news jarring.

This was removed from the schedule back when they announced their winter schedule back in July. Odd its making headlines now.

It's also scheduled to resume in April, as noted in this article you listed so it hasn't been dropped all together.

Inaugural YOW-YEG is today on PD. After the end of this month they will have the route to themselves this winter.

I'm guessing nobody in the media noticed it back then and it only got noticed when a passenger came forward to complain.

AF/KL will own a 19.9% stake in SAS, once the deal is approved. Also, part of the deal is that the Scandinavian airline will leave Star Alliance and join Skyteam. (As a reminder, SAS filed for bankruptcy protection in the US last year.)

https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidnikel/...candinavian-airline-sas/?sh=537ee1635967

It will be interesting to see how SAS's short and long haul strategy will change due to this shift in allegiance.

Considering the Dutch want to cap the number of flights at AMS, this is a smart move by AF/KL. Securing a third hub in Europe (CPH), and to a lesser extent, ARN and OSL, which will enable growth. Also, Skyteam has always been the weaker of the 3 alliances. This move will help offset some of that weakness.

SAS always had a strained relationship with Star Alliance. They were sort of a neglected child, and they were never part of the Transatlantic JV between AC/LH group/UA. Let's see how that relationship will develop with AF/KL. The plan is for SAS to join the AF/KL/DL/VS joint venture across the Atlantic.

Honestly, if you are not UA, AC or LH in Star Alliance you are a neglected child. Just ask LO. LH either buys you out (OS and LX) or sabotages you as a member within your alliance. LO and UA are no longer code sharing on flights which is strange when you're in the same alliance. Maybe there will be movement of other airlines in the 3 major alliances.

What will be interesting here is how AC's route planning will be affected. SK had good connections to central/eastern Europe out of CPH of which AC will now not use. I'm not sure if CPH has enough passengers to fill AC's 788 or 789. I feel like I even flew a 777 on the route a couple of years ago. Maybe the 321 will take over. I believe SK flies from YYZ with 321's.

I believe AC caters mostly to the leisure demand in/out of CPH. Pretty big cruise industry out of there as well, so that is what AC is after. I don't think they rely too much on connections beyond CPH. And if that's not the case and demand does indeed dry up a bit due to SK leaving Star, they can always downgrade the routes to the A321XLRs when they arrive. I think AC will be fine as it is though. Toronto can support the dreamliner, and YUL might get downgraded to the XLR if need be.

The most vulnerable will be SK's flight to YYZ. But even that route might stick around. It's only an A321 service, and Toronto is a big enough market to serve on it's own, without relying on connections on this side either. We'll see what happens.

As for LO, i think they're ripe for the picking by another alliance as well. They don't bring much value to Star alliance in Europe that isn't already covered by LH Group.

Lets see what happens with WestJet. WS tends to codeshare with Skyteam airlines. They can provide SK with some limited connections in Toronto.

As for Star, the one airlines that stands out is TAP Air Portugal. They frequently are offering good pricing between North America and Europe vrs the other Star airlines.

WS is almost a curious airline for me now. Yes I understand they want to concentrate on YYC as a base but how much can you grow YYC? There are supposedly no plans to increase the amount of 787's so no growth in long haul flights so there is no growth there. How many more US flights can you add to YYC on the Max? And then even if you saturate the prairies with WS only there's only so much growth there. WS has decided to go after low hanging fruit and leaving YYZ, YUL and YVR? That's like LH saying we'll focus on BER and we'll leave FRA and MUC to others. Maybe if they feel they've saturated YYC they'll move on to YVR but they'll have a huge fight on their hands at YVR. AC won't leave YVR. I guess my long winded point is that I thought good point WS can provide feed to SK but their limited flights at YYZ will probably amount to nothing.

It's funny you mention TAP. They are/will be for sale and rumor is surprise surprise LH is interested in buying them out. If that happens, you can kiss that good pricing goodbye.

Westjet is retrenching and waiting it out.

I don't know how airline mania in Canada ends, but in the situation of high fuel prices, limited supply of pilots, and rising interest rates crimping demand, a big expansion does not seem to be in the cards for the foreseeable future.

About the only chance for a quick hit of growth by Westjet in the near future might be that AC is going to have fun negotiations with its pilot union coming up in the next year.

Given they are transferring all the SunWings flying to WestJet that will be interesting. This time next year there will be a significant number of sun destinations on WestJet aircraft out of Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and a host of smaller centers in Canada.

It is a very weird mix of flights.

I think their focus is on Western Canada unless and sun destinations. So out of YYZ they fly to Edmonton, Vancouver, Saskatoon, Regina, Kelowna, (and I hope we get Victoria after swoop is killed).

I think they are very much doing their own thing and not sticking to any pre-existing model of what an airline should be.

I like TAP and do hope they remain independent. The Government of Portugal plays a strong role in their direction.

Abbotsford Airport (YXX) has already broken its all time record, which was set in 2019 at 1.008 million.

It’s projected to have 1.2 million total passengers for 2023.
