^ Atlantis, wow. For a kid like me from Tyndall Park, going down Pembina was like going to another world. The McDonald's with the caboose, Atlantis... I never actually went to them but seeing them as I passed by was amazing, haha. As a very young child I always knew I was very far from home whenever I saw Summerland looming on the horizon

The story I had previously heard is the same family that ran Golf Central Ice Cream ran an extremely popular ice cream shop in Headingly on Portage Ave at Dodds Rd (next the Subway). That location was expropriated by the province for intersection improvements. Before the Headingly location shut down it was normally staffed by an adult son and his mom. Online it was said his dad also used to staff the shop but had passed away before I became aware of the place.

It would seem they may have taken the payment from the Headingly place to open the new location and perhaps something has changed within the family and that is the reason the newly opened place is up for sale.

Anyone know if Doug Stephen's 529 Uptown/Uptown Burger in 201 Portage is still happening, or is it dead? It was supposed to open "spring 2023" but nothing seems to be happening behind all that hoarding.

I was also wondering ...Ir =t sure had tons of press late last year. Now, trades are busy and that could be it but late March was the target? / now September in a day and nothing?

I'm in the building everyday and I see no activity. maybe some work is going on behind the hoarding in concourse but other than some tape on floor in Lobby, 0 is happening.

OAKBERRY is coming to Winnipeg. I've never heard of them but they 600 locations in 30 countries. "Brazil’s number one açai brand, will open their first-ever Winnipeg store at 201 Portage! Coming soon to the concourse, OAKBERRY will offer 100% natural and fresh açai bowls and smoothies with unlimited toppings that customers can customize to their liking."

Has anyone hear where the first few Church's Chicken locations will be?
It would appear only fast food places and few full service eat in places are opening these days. The risks between costs, challenges hiring staff & dine & dash are making it tough.

And I've still never been to Seasons aside from driving a bus down Kenaston past it and behind Ikea. Hate the traffic in that area with a passion.

You're not missing much, it's mostly American chains. I used to work at the IHOP there. The owner lived in Calgary and owned about 5 other franchises in Western Canada. He would stop by about twice per year to make sure his franchise was still making him lots of money.

American chains are generally better, for example Mary Browns vs. Popeyes. I was excited for Mary Browns coming to our town, what a disappointment.

I see, Mary Browns is decent but I haven't been to Popeyes yet. I understand people want predictability and consistency and American chains are good at delivering that.

It's just very disappointing to see unfair economic advantages being given to companies that have no interest in investing in Winnipeg. The City and Province spent $22 million (of tax payer money) on tax breaks to bring these American chains to Winnipeg, which will only make it harder for local businesses to survive. For comparison, the City of Winnipeg spends only $2.5 million per year fixing sidewalks and bike lanes throughout the entire city. I live in Osborne Village and there are so many sidewalks that are crumbling so bad that I frequently see people in wheelchairs struggling to roll over them.

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/subsidies-retail-commercial-1.4109357

Kenaston Common already has lots of vacant commercial properties, especially north of Lindenwoods Dr. These American companies are only in Winnipeg for short term profits, they will likely leave Winnipeg (or at least their location in Seasons of Tuxedo) after less than 20 years. Then the City of Winnipeg is left paying for a bunch of services (roads, water and waste, etc.) to vacant properties (vacant properties that they recently "attracted" to Winnipeg through tax breaks).

For example, one of my favourite restaurants growing up was Lovey's BBQ on Marion St. However, they went out of business about 5 years ago now, probably due to increased competition from other BBQ restaurants in Winnipeg. And the only other BBQ restaurants in Winnipeg are Montana's, Famous Dave's, and Tony Roma's, all of which are American chains. It's hard not to feel frustrated that some of the best local restaurants we have here in Winnipeg are being driven out of business by chain stores.

I used to work at the IHOP in Seasons of Tuxedo. I would always encourage my friends and family not to go there, and thankfully none of them ever did (they actually listened to me for once haha). Instead, I recommended local breakfast restaurants like Wannabee's Dinner or Red Top Dinner. The owner of the Winnipeg IHOP lives in Alberta and owns about 5 other IHOP's in Western Canada. He only visits Winnipeg about twice per year, I can guarantee you none of the profits from that IHOP are being reinvested in Winnipeg.

Anyways, not trying to shame people for eating at the restaurants they like. I'm just frustrated that the City of Winnipeg gives economic advantages to chain stores instead of local businesses, when it should be the other way around.
