Well, because their meat has gone from barely edible to sub par. The cheap meats would give me a gout attack within a couple of hours. I personally only want 1 perhaps 2 meats & they put little on. The one on Elice never uses much sauce. The cheese never gets browned on top. The Prices are no a great deal. I moved on long agoi. I would much rather pay more, eat it less often and get better quality.

First few times I went to Za I loved it. Then suddenly it went to shit. I even asked the manager what happened. It was bland, dry, tasteless. He said nothing had changed but it clearly had. Haven’t been back since.

It is a tough location if it wants to remain a single-storey excuse of a steakhouse with parking on both sides of the building and absolutely no street activation. In fact if I remember correctly the main entrance to the building is not even facing Pembina. The former Applebee’s across the street is facing the same issue. Why were these jokes of a building even allowed to be built in the first place?

Jfc this city is straight up allergic to urbanism. It’s literally next to one of the busiest transit hubs in the city, and a 5 minute walk from Chancellor Station. Not to mention having some of the best AT infrastructure in the city. One could easily live a car-free life just like a lot of people do across the street at the new building on 30 University Crescent. There’s no more excuses to not have significant residential development on the stretch of Pembina from University Crescent to Chancellor at the very least and all the way to Markham really.

If anyone enjoys a good poutine every now and then I recommend trying the pulled pork poutine at a Leopolds tavern. I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Forget the poutinerie. If you want a poutine go to Leo's. 👍

I didn’t realize Lot 88 is a northern Ontario chain. Sudbury Orillia North Bay Thunder Bay Winnipeg.

Apparently Earls faced the building away from Pembina because it made the taxes cheaper.

That whole block with the Lot 88 building, the gas station, and mc Donalds would be ideal for TOD high-rise residential. Basically the two Arc buildings plunked down right there. Unfortunately that gas station and mc Donalds will likely be there until the end of time. If only the city could just rezone it to residential and boot them all out. I'm not even sure if that's feasible, but I feel like when it comes to multi-billion dollar projects like transit ways, taking some aggressive steps with rezoning should be considered.

Is Osmows not a common thing in Winnipeg/Manitoba? It's EVERYWHERE in the GTA and I assumed it's a thing Canada wide?

Pretty sure Osmow's is a chain out of eastern Canada and perhaps originally Quebec. The upcoming Regent location will be their first in Manitoba. Also until about 10 years ago Manitoba had almost no shawarma restaurants at all. Based on general timelines of Obby Khan's football career and the founding of Osmow's it seems likely that Shawarma Khan may be heavily based on Osmow's knowing that Winnipeg had a growing Muslim community and that the style of food was popular beyond just the Muslim community but had yet to really establish a presence in Winnipeg in 2012. Shawarma Khan also secured a prime location next to the Rum Hut at IG Field when it opened in 2013 and the recently retired Obby would often be seen working the stand. It made it extremely popular among Bomber fans. Osmow's has also continued their expansion across Canada.

These locations go back almost 30 years and Winnipeg was a very different place at the time. From memory Route 90 didn't go much past Wilkes (basically Sterling Lyon now) at the time and retail west of Pembina and south of Taylor (aka Kenaston Commons, etc) did not exist. Yet lots of homes were already built in Linden Woods and Whyte Ridge. Landing a prime location off the just completed Abinojii Mikanah/Pembina interchange and a short distance from those, at the time, underserviced residents made a lot of sense. Not to mention there was the possibility of drawing students from the U of M campus which itself is under served. The busy transit hub did not exist nor did Chancellor Station or any AT infrastructure or 30 University Cres.

I recall when I started university, Kenaston continued south to Scurfield where it dead-ended, and then I had to go east down Scurfield to get to Waverley. I think the Bishop Grandin-Kenaston connection opened in 1998.

Yeah, I'm going back to the mid to late 80's. Scurfield was a new road. Used to race on it at night since there was no traffic. Whyte Ridge was just a plan.

Nope. I was in Toronto, mall downtown forget the name and it was just opening there, with another shawarma place already there. I think the market is bigger there but it's starting to catch on here.

Skye Sundae on Ottawa Ave is the new location of the former Golf Central Ice Cream. It opened on July 1 and the owners have already put it up for sale. I wonder what happened.

The McDonalds on Pembina has been there a long time. it was originally further north on Pembina by a few blocks, just north of Bishop. Had the train car you could reserve for birthday parties.

I remember when Pembina was much less busy and way before the underpass for Bishop and the Bishop extension. There was a Rib Shack in a gravel lot right where the Bishop extension is now. An Arizona Fitness (I think thats what it was called) was there too. It used to be across the street in the Staples/Best Buy strip mall back when it was a real enclosed mall with a K-Mart at one end.

Lot 88 seemed busy when it was Earls and I always heard the entrance faced away from Pembina so the patio was quieter. A friend liked Lot 88's food. Another friend tried the Sports Bar and said they were clueless. Like, didnt know which sports to have on, didnt know how to appeal to that crowd.

I cant remember when the Esso went in but the gas station across the street used to be a Gulf and it was situated perpendicular to how it is now.

My grandparents lived in Summerland. My grandpa filmed them building the Bishop extension a lot lol

The Applebees was popular for years when it opened. Its now a Dentist office. That whole strip mall was different. Originally had a Water Slides (I think it was Atlantis Waterslides but maybe Im imagining the name). And Malibu restaurant.
