Was Liberty Lunch just to the left on Second Street at that time? I remember some good times there!

I moved the Austin area around that time as well. I was still a teen then so I did not get to downtown that much back then. I do remember school trips to parmer auditorium though.

My fave memories are at Parmer Auditorium, Barton Springs Mall, and watching the bats come out from the Congress Street Bridge!

The number of folks who say Palmer Blvd and Parmer Auditorium....I'm absolutely confident I've done that myself also.

Growing up, we always called it "Municipal Auditorum" - I hated the name. Back in those days, it seemed like every other city building or property had the word "municipal" somewhere in its title. In those guys, I wanted my little home town to be more "big city" so I hated seing "municipal" almost everywhere I went.

I no longer live in ATX, and the "big city" persona has long since come to stay - for better or worse - and I now kind of miss that "municipal" moniker. Funny how that happens...

Mueller Airport had Municipal in it as well..........felt that made Austin seem so small compared to other cities.

Compared to what it is now, Austin was small when I got here in January of 1959.
IIRC, the city limits signs said the population was 182,000….and there was no “metro” area then.
The only suburbs were Rollingwood and West Lake Hills.
Round Rock was a tiny town way north out in the sticks.
Cedar Park & Leander were just wide spots in the 183 road with a few house trailers.

I later learned that Tom Spencer passed away on April 2nd. RIP Gardensoul.
I didn't know he had passed away. I'm very sad to hear this.

Also Capitol Chevrolet was located at the current Whole Foods site at Lamar & 6th.
I bought my first car (a 1977 Monte Carlo) at Capital Chevrolet at that location. I remember it being a very rainy day. Drove up Mopac to my apartment on Woodhollow Dr.

We bought a new 1973 Chevelle station wagon from them to haul our three sons around.
My brother bought a new 1959 VW Bug at the original Austin Volkswagen dealership that was on the SE corner of W.5th & N.Lamar.
Remember Charlie Partlow, the “Rambler Man” whose dealership was on Congress? He died in a fire at his West Austin home, IIRC.

In 1985, I failed my DL test in a old '77 MC. I could barely tell where the hood ended or where the trunk started! I borrowed the car from my Mom's friend, and what a wild car to drive. With the steering wheel, you could move your hands from 10 and 2.......to 6 and 12 (in BOTH directions) and still be driving straight.

Hard to believe those were legal to drive.

Our first house in Austin - Windsor Hills neighborhood.
Wife & I bought it new from Nash Phillips Copus in 1971.
Our 1967 Malibu in the driveway, along with my grandmother’s 1958 Oldsmobile 88.

That's a great picture and I'm sure it's a great memory for you. That, my friends, is a quintessential picture of the fulfillment of the promise what was once the American dream: a house of your very own with a two car garage and two cars in the driveway.

Nash Phillips Copus is a name I hadn't heard in many years. Whatever happened to them?

They went out of business during the Savings & Loan crash in the mid-80s.
