In Ontario by comparison, I had friends whose Dads with HS education made great hourly wages and would work double and triple overtime shifts to afford a cottage, boat, pool, nice vacations or a combination of "nice things". Real estate values were low and home ownership rates were high. Aside from working in a dirty plant they were Living the Canadian Dream if you will.

Hopefully the last three years will ignite the return of manufacturing jobs which in turn may help many areas. A matter of long term stability.
