Gridiron football is an evolution of "rugby football" (its original name) which has a tradition centuries old. No need to be hypocritical, if it were truly North American it wouldn't be called "football" but rather "egg ball", "Huron ball" or "pointy ball". If you can say football, we can say pitch.
