On a side note, the 400 W apartments are looking HUGE. What a big project, and right next to the future hardware building development. I sure don't miss the dog kennel, horse stables, and run down warehouse on that corner.
I still think it's too large. It still has 3 lanes of traffic in each direction, left hand turn lanes, and parking on both sides of the street. That's 9 lanes worth of asphalt. I lived in marmalade for 3 years and I never saw traffic that I thought justified that much roadway save for maybe the LDS Church Conference. I suspect more and more attendees will be taking transit to that too so I say give it a diet. I like the bulb-outs but if we put that road on a diet we could still have them.

Handsome John,

Any update (that you are able to share) about JLJL interview process with SL County, and whether there is any timeframe from on a decision or announcement from the County?

I agree that there are still too many lanes. Traffic after Jazz games and LDS Conference is not bad at all since there are probably a dozen routes that people can take to get on a freeway.

When I first moved to the area I heard that there are long-term plans to add Trax to Bountiful on 400 W. I'm not sure if that's true but it would push some of the traffic to 300 W...

Nice additions to Salt Lake

With all the new apartments and housing going in down town, I think a great addition to the city would be an entire block dedicated as a park. Somewhat like a small Central Park or liberty park that could be used by the new residence and also add a nice feel to the city. I'm thinking a nice park with some mature tree, large pond, and places for people to enjoy the outside. I envision it being more on the east side where the apartments are. I also would like to see a large gym put in. Similar in scope to the old Deseret gym, but not the Deseret gym all the added residence will need some nice amenities to sustain downtown growth. To ensure people will continue moving to the city, we need to give them good reason. I'll let you guys figure out how to pay for it. Lol

Sim City isn't real life; parks don't increase density. We don't have enough people living near our parks or enough programmed actives to make the ones we have function where they should. More parks is less urban and requires diverting more police from areas that need them in the city.

I agree. If anything the city should put money into making Pioneer park nicer. That park will start being utilized a lot more as density grows around it.

Come to think, wasn't there some sort of plan a while back to make improvements to the park?

The bottom line is that Liberty Park IS our Central Park and always will be.

Lol, I like your sim city reference. Setting money aside. I would add a large park to the east. Closer to where people live. Maybe remove pioneer park and develope that land instead. That park really serves no purpose for the everyday residences in Salt Lake. Keep in mind, I realize this is a pipe dream.

Really the overall message of the book is about using what you're passionate about "in real life" to teach. Music, sports, architecture. For me it's toys and comics. But I use architecture a lot too.

ANYWAY.

Thanks for those pics Sean. There's some great old bones back there. I especially like the structure to the left, with the large boarded up windows. I hope they'll be able to restore and reuse some of those original facades.

It may be surrounded by single-family homes and duplexes but some places have up to six people living in them. There also isn't an overabundance of surface parking and the streets are much narrower than anywhere in downtown. The blocks surrounding Liberty Park are probably more dense than most blocks in East Downtown.

The neighbors agreed and while most of the petition was approved, the request to go from 50% max glazing per the zone to 95% glazing was denied so now the architect has the opportunity to design a facade that fits in with the neighborhood a little better.
