I am not sure about this. I think there will always be a segment for whom the level of analysis done isn't enough. It's also the nature of any investment this large that it's going to take years, see cost overruns and scope increases. Canadians just don't seem to have the ambition and patience to see these things through.
Hopefully, HFR comes in at the typical level of Canadian mediocrity. Would be good to get from Ottawa to a Toronto in 3.5 hrs.

I think most of what the companies/residents want can (and likely will over the next decade or so) be accomplished with an enhanced GO service (which is how other countries handle transportation at those distances). A parallel HSR service with similar travel times doesn’t offer a whole lot more benefit for most users (and therefore would be hard to offer with any sort of frequency).
The cities along the route are relatively small, have very low density, are very car oriented, have a relatively small percentage of their economic activity and population in the downtown core and have no metro system to feed the line. That is not the kind of environment where HSR works.
London to Toronto some sense, but with such a low population (and only an hour improvement over the existing Via service) it is really hard to justify the 10s of billions in cost.
