For whatever reason, we tend to compare ourselves to much bigger cities like Calgary, Vancouver and Minneapolis and beat ourselves up for not having the same transit infrastructure. But in reality, our comparables are more like Hamilton, Halifax and El Paso... none of which have rail based rapid transit.
Hamilton is about to start construction on a 14 kilometer LRT line.
Kitchener (CMA population 520,000) is about to open a 20 kilometer LRT line.
Ottawa has a 10 line, 58 station BRT system and is constructing a 35 kilometer LRT to be open by 2023. (It’s first BRT line opened in 1983 when the CMA population was 550,000)

Winnipeg will have a 10 kilometer BRT line.
