I am amused by the oversell on what is nearby each station. Westboro? Little Italy? St. Paul University? Trainyards? The last one takes the cake. If you look at the plans and what it says, there is no pedestrian connection between the Train station and the Trainyards development. Some of the locations nearby are beyond the 600m circle and don't even have alternate bus connections.
As far as light rail versus light metro, we have to understand that if there is any hope of extending service to the suburbs (probably sometime after 2050) we have to allow for the possibility of level crossings to keep costs manageable. This is the exact same argument that applies to the Eglinton line in Toronto. It will not necessarily all be grade separated or extensions may not be grade separated so you have to choose the technology looking towards that potential future. And certainly anything that does not use overhead wires is out of the question otherwise unsightly security fences would be needed at all surface locations.
I am resigned to the fact that the city will never provide downtown rail service to the south end, but I will respond accordingly and avoid downtown when possible as I do today or use my car. The O-Train as it is currently designed is 🞵🞵🞵🞵 if you are not a Carleton University student. There are not enough stations that provide adequate bus connectivity.
