Councillor Allard with a strong rationale for approval of the Provencher project (recorded in the minutes). Basically said the area needs many more projects like it if the street is going to thrive. Carried!

They are. Some woman over a hundred years of age was opposed to a 7 floor condo beside her property a couple of years back. backwards thinking, backwards people. She garnered all kinds of sympathy that I think nixed the proposal? Why would you not want that area to thrive? Much of it is ripe for investment. Provencher Bl should have been the French equivalent of Corydon or Os Village decades ago..

Which casino? McPhillips or Regent? If McPhillips, any word on the conference centre that was supposed to be a part of it?

That's certainly good news, but it's somehow comical to think that CanadInns will have two fairly tall hotels barely 2 km apart, straddling both sides of a drab, down at the heels light industrial area.

The challenge with that proposal is more that it is effectively encroaching on the neighbouring properties by building right up to the property line rather than staying within the accepted setbacks. That would mean that if the neighbouring property wanted to do a similar development in the future they wouldn't get approval as the two developments would be far too close together.

I think the other issue could be based on where the ESP/Winnipeg boundary is within the Perimeter. From what I recall though the proposed development falls on the Winnipeg side. Building a multi-family apartment style development just across the Winnipeg boundary is playing a little on a the dirty side of things.

^ I don't think ESP could ever get away with allowing MURBs anywhere except that little wedge between Winnipeg city limits and the Perimeter. I'm sure they'd like to establish a little multi-unit residential foothold there... it would be good for their tax base.

BTW since Winnipeg is officially out of the race for Amazon HQ2 can we now focus on our bid to host the 2024 Winter Olympics? After all you miss all the shots you don't take...

Of the three options - Amazon HQ2, 2024 Winter Olympics and emerald ash borer - we're hosting the one that'll cost the taxpayers the least.

I am sure we have discussed this - we can't do the winter olympics (you can't change geography).

So, we need to bid on the SUMMER olympics. Most of the Pan-Am games venues will suffice. Fresh coat of paint at the pan-an pool - and good to go.

I'm sure we could find a site or two a couple hundred kilometers away - just like Beijing did for 2024.

We'd need bobsled runs and whatnot, but since an Olympic bid assumes (unofficially) an unlimited budget from the taxpayers...

Not sure if serious....?

They wouldn't just demand new venues. They'd demand everything from a whole lot of new residential to house everyone to traffic lanes from the airport to the venues set aside for the Olympic committee brass.

Rio 2016 had a lot of cheap labor, so they hosted it for only USD 4.6 billion. (That's direct costs, NOT including all the upgrades to road, rail, airports and other infrastructure.) Beijing 2008 cost USD 40-44 billion and Sochi 2014 cost USD 51 billion.

Oh but you are wrong there. There is nothing to say we couldn't use tax payer money to build suitable facilities for the alpine events. Sure if would be cheaper is we had mountains here but if we as taxpayers want to chase after every pipedream we have not hope of winning like Amazon HQ2 we definitely need to get behind bidding on the Winter Olympics. Think of all those spinoff benefits we are going to miss out on.
