I've been following this forum for some time and found it to be a useful tool for staying abreast of developments in the city. Thank you to those who have been posting. For anyone with an interest in how the harbour was redeveloped from the finger piers to the current concrete apron, I encourage you to view this short film. It includes coverage of the construction of Harbour Drive and the Southside Road. It's sad to see what was lost in the process, but the result was a definite improvement in traffic flowon land and on the water. The film is called "St. John's: A Harbour Reborn" and is available on a Mun website http://stor.mun.ca/handle/123456789/31657

Anyone else find it unusual that they are using a tower crane on the convention centre expansion. Just thought those things were used on more larger high rise building projects. Anyone know what the criteria is for the need to use one? Is it the type or size of the steel beams that dictates this?

I think the reason they are using the crane is the limited space on site. The centre is gonna cover just about all that area that is dug out, so it would be difficult to use those extending trunk cranes like they are using on Fortis Place. Still it is kinda unusual to see such a short tower crane like that being used.

I've seen people using small tower cranes on 2 story houses in Germany so I think it's just preference and space availability

Never really thought of that. That makes perfect sense now. Thanks.

Multi-Million Dollar Subdivision Underway

Quote:
Construction has started on a major multi-million dollar subdivision in CBS. CBS Land Development Limited is developing a 30-Million dollar subdivision at King Fisher Way, just off Cherry Lane in Manuels, overlooking the ocean. Developer Bill Clarke says 25 luxury homes will be built with lots costing between 175-thousand and 450-thousand dollars.

Meanwhile, Clarke says another 12-million dollar project is underway and selling quickly in downtown St. John's. The development involves the construction of 24 condominiums at Fort William Station, located across from the St. John's Port Authority.

14 of the condominiums, which cost in the vicinity of 500-thousand dollars each, have already been sold

Clarke says all units have access to a glass enclosed elevator looking straight out through the Narrows. The condominiums are 14 hundred to 16 hundred square feet with underground parking.

St. John's council turfs campground plan near Cape Spear

Quote:
A bid to develop a large commercial campground on the road to Cape Spear has met with unanimous rejection from St. John's city council.

The 21-acre area at Blackhead would have included 16 cabins and 181 sites that could accommodate tents and recreational vehicles, but would have meant too much traffic and noise, councillors concluded at their regular meeting on Monday evening.

Coun. Wally Collins said the proposal also would have raised concerns about fire safety, as there is only one way in and out of the area.

"If you get [600] to 700 people there in the night time, one cigarette butt — that place goes up," Collins said.

"The people from Blackhead are caught inside. They can't get out, they can't even get out [on] Maddox Cove Road. The only place they can go is more or less jump in the ocean," he said.

Many residents in the Blackhead area had opposed the proposal as unsuitable for the area.

Support for proponents Dave Francis and Bob Smith, though, had come from different quarters, including the East Coast Trail Association.

Councillors admitted that more campgrounds are needed in St. John's, but the proposed location was not appropriate.

Coun. Shannie Duff said she too was concerned about safety risks, including fire.

"If there is only one exit from that area and you are putting the equivalent of a small town in that area, I think that is a sufficient reason that I cannot in the final instance support it," Duff said. http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/newfou...ected-709.html
I'm indifferent on this one.. Would've been a good business opportunity but there was obviously some legitimate safety concerns

Thanks, it was an interesting bit of history, and it seems photos of the project are rare or non-existent. I had little idea about the actual construction process until now. I noticed many other videos on the site which are worth a look as well.

Hey guys - a couple months ago someone posted an archived video of a tram-ridealong downtown. I thought it was NTV or CBC but I can't find it. Needless to say, I am looking for this video and I can't find it here either. Can someone link me?

Thanks

There was a video posted on Youtube some time ago, but it was removed. I found the post and the video seems to no longer exist online due to copyright issues.

However, the following one from MUN has a bit of similar footage, a few seconds of a streetcar on Queens Rd at Longs Hill, around the 11:55 min. mark, also just before that there is a shot of a streetcleaner trolley car:

The MUN archives are a goldmine which I never dug in while in school. I kind of regret it now

Great. I wonder how many they'll close and leave vacant.

Google cars roaming the streets today! Hopefully this means an update to street view, it's amazing how much the city's changed since.

Looking forward to that, and it would be nice if they did some more outlying scenic areas and small towns in more detail, although the coverage is quite good considering there are some relatively large towns or cities in the US that are not even done yet.
