IPSCO Place needs these upgrades...without them, the city will inevitably lose Agibition and the Royal Red, not to mention other events that will pass the city over for lack of viable facilities. These two events alone are huge for our economy. It's hard to have a successful, vibrant city without a good economy. Community programs are great and essential, but a poor economy will lead to social problems that will be hard to fix with community centres. A strong economy is the basis for a strong city...and those 6 sheets of ice will save families from having to drive 45 minutes for ice time at 6am in the dead of winter.

To say that your pragmatic is like saying that Rosie ODonnell is a looker.

Great post Brannymuffin and I couldn't agree more. The millions of dollars that Ipsco Place brings back into the Regina economy on an annual basis is unrivalled and its essential that upgrades and reno's take place that'll bring the facilities into the 21 century. With the expansion of the Agridome it would likely bring in more concerts and entertainment as well as more sporting tournaments which in turn pumps millions more dollars back into the community. Fantastic news no doubt about it and another feather in the cap for Fiacco.

RCMP Museum?

Any current images of the RCMP Museum floating around? I remember seeing photos of the model & it looked quite eyecatching.

I thought there was going to be a grocery store on the main floor

I've never had Portuguese food before, but I was playing around on Google and it looks (and sounds) good!

There is no doubt that most of this is true. But if you read Jane Jacobs or Dr. Richard Florida. You would see that basing such a large portion of a communities capital investments into the tourist industry is not the most stable types of local economies. The main reason is that such a market fluctuates dramatically with the economy and it also makes a local economy reliant upon imported dollars to generate local wealth. Where as local dollars generating wealth have a higher multiplier effect and benefit the local economy better, they also tend to more recession resistant. Import replacements should get the largest investments, specifically technology. The Regina Chamber of Commerce came out and stated that post-secondary education should be free, on the condition the student stays here. The City of Regina should offer to cover 1 class per semester, as part of the program. This deserves money over the Exhibition Grounds.

This does not mean tourism can not be an important part of a local economy but it must be one part of a much larger diversified economy. Therefore, I would be more then willing to support an equal allocation in capital investment for projects that help the tourism industry.

I can be so sure because I know. The city can't afford thats why they look for funding from private corporations, the province and the feds. If the city does end up spending a little it will be so beneficial in the long run. The increase in revenue for IPSCO place, not to mention the increase in visitors to the city spending money in restaraunts and hotels from new or expanded events that will be taking place in the Brandt Centre and other venues around IPSCO place.

Yes, but tourism is as sustainable as betting all the property taxes on black 32.

You know,ok, so how much is industry providing and what are they recieveing in return ?

How much are the other levels committed to contributing ?

How much will the city spend ?

Not mention, they would be better off investing this into more tech research, not just petrol.

Let's get back to construction

Did they mention anything about who purchased Superstore? Do we know anything like if they are gonna renovate the existing building, demolish it and build something new? This is huge for the downtown even if the building is a little outside of the downtown. I believe all of the major downtown buildings are now full, or in the process of filling. This is all pretty exciting when you think of how many empty buildings there were 7 years ago.

Discussing capital investment is construction,pal.
As for less empty buildings, that is correct but there are also more parking lots as well. Meaning that the lack of emptiness isn't due to economic activity but to demolition. It's a smart little game, you might have 1 or 2 projects but by tearing down these buildings, you reduce available office space making the vacancy rate drop. This makes you look good and you can brag about how downtown as developed so much under your watch. When all that really happened was you reduced the about of space. Pretty sneaky stuff, eh!

Besides the future demolition of Presutti's what have they torn down in the last 7 years? The Bay, Army and Navy, Leader Building, F-Division and a handful of other small buildings in the downtown have all been gutted and brought up to code and filled with viable business' contributing to the economy.
