Salt Lake City & MSA/CSA Rundown

It's Official, Salt Lake City Will Be The Host For The 2034 Winter Olympics

KUER BBC World News Reporting - Full Article @ https://www.kuer.org/sports-recreati...e-city-in-2034

Salt Lake City will be an Olympics host again after the International Olympic Committee formally awarded Utah the 2034 Winter Games on Wednesday...The plan outlined in Paris is for one of the most compact layouts in Olympic history. All of the venues are within a one-hour drive of the athletes village on The University of Utah campus. Another part of the pitch is an affordable price tag. No new permanent construction is needed with all 13 venues ready to go and each having played a role when the city hosted the last time. Everything is in place, Bullock noted...

...The team presenting the state's bid on stage to IOC members in Paris included Fraser Bullock, the president and CEO of Utah's Olympic bid, Gov. Spencer Cox, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall and Alpine ski great Lindsey Vonn. Back home in Salt Lake City's Washington Square, a 3 a.m. public watch party gathered to see a broadcast of the announcement.

"I am so excited," exclaimed Salt Laker Cally Quiel, who was wearing a 2002 Olympics hat and volunteer's vest she bought on eBay. "I was 11 years old when this came through in 2002 and I can not wait for my kids to be the same age I was when this happens again."...

Following the watch party at City Hall's Washington Square in downtown Salt Lake City, organizers put on a drone show to celebrate the Olympics return to Utah.

SALT LAKE CITY — Plans are moving forward to build a new state history museum and increase security on Capitol Hill.

The Capitol Preservation Board and architects are finishing designs for the new Museum of Utah, a multi-million dollar facility to replace the old State Office Building and data center that sit north of the Capitol building itself. Demolition will start this summer of 2022.

The design, which will closely mirror the existing Capitol, will also include an area for tour buses to come in and a large landscaped plaza for people to enjoy

A segment of the article:
QUOTE:
...The Utah Legislature is working to fund a new seismically sound five-story, 151,535 square-foot building just north of the Utah Capitol that would give Utah's historic artifacts collection the permanent home that state historians have requested. In addition to the museum, the building plan calls for a new conference center, office space, 400 parking stalls, and electric vehicle charging stations.

However, its most distinctive feature is the space set aside for a state history museum and history collection area, It's a building that will give Utahns a chance to see pieces of the state's past they may have never seen before. Jennifer Ortiz, the director of the Utah Division of State History, is excited about that prospect, calling Utah's history collection "truly incredible."

"It's such an incredible opportunity — a once-in-a-generation opportunity," she told KSL.com. "To get to participate in thinking about how we can highlight the state's history and the collections is really just a beautiful gift that we can give to the state and to Utahns."

The massive project will replace the aging and abandoned State Office Building that was constructed over 60 years ago. The old building is slated to be torn down in mid-August, according to Jim Russell, the director of the Utah Division of Facilities and Construction Management. Construction of the new building should begin in the fall.

The entire project is estimated to cost $219 million, with $110 million coming over from money saved from the construction of the new Utah State Prison, Russell said. Gov. Spencer Cox has requested that $85 million go toward the North Capitol project, with another $7 million in ongoing funds, according to his 2023 budget. As of Monday, SB6, the legislative bill that covers all sorts of infrastructure and general government spending, lists $68 million toward the project.

It's unclear whether the proposed funds in SB6 would complete the remaining cost of the project.

There are also economic variables that can change the total cost of the project.

"Of course, we are concerned with the continued escalation of the construction market due to labor and material shortages," Russell added, in an email to KSL.com.

Still, the new building is now projected to open in either late 2025 or early 2026 — about 12 to 18 months later than originally anticipated because of earthquake mitigation work that is expected to lengthen the project timeline, Ortiz said.

The delay, however, puts the building right on track to open just in time for a major nationwide celebration...

That’s freaking awesome! I love seeing hideous modern crap replaced with classical looking buildings.

Digging Deeper | Government Building - Fulfilling the Historic Vision For Utah’s Capitol Complex

“We wanted this to fit in with what is going on with the Capitol design but be just a step down so it doesn't mimic or interfere with it. We want this to look like it’s been here 100 years too.” —Nathan Leavitt, Design Architect and Principal, VCBO Architecture

By Brian Fryer - Full Article @ https://www.enr.com/articles/58668-f...apitol-complex

...At the urging of state lawmakers to create something significant on the site, members of the Capitol Preservation board turned to previous master plans, including the original site plan drawn up in 1911 by renowned landscape architect John Charles Olmstead.

State lawmakers and the governor felt there was an opportunity to complete the vision of the older plans that included a north building and plaza. State preservationists and leaders saw an opportunity to build a new “front door” to welcome the public to the Capitol complex and to create an educational space dedicated to Utah’s history.

The $250-million North Capitol Building will include the Museum of Utah, a public showcase of the state’s history, space for the permanent and safe storage of the state’s collection of historic artifacts, office and meeting space, two new public plazas and the replacement of an underground parking garage.

“This is one of the most complex buildings I’ve ever been involved with,” says design architect Nathan Leavitt, a principal with Salt Lake City-based VCBO Architecture.

The 160,000-sq-ft., four-story structure is designed in the same neoclassical style as the two legislative office buildings completed in 2000 and the historic Capitol building completed in 1916.

According to Leavitt and Karen Ferguson, associate principal at VCBO who has been involved with projects at the Capitol for more than 20 years, challenges with the project have ranged from finding the right stone to determining the appropriate structural design, accommodating the unique needs of archivists from the Utah Division of State History and managing a significant change in scope handed to the team after construction had begun.

Salt Lake City-based Okland Construction was awarded the CMGC contract for the project in September of 2021 and work got underway in early 2022 with the demolition of a 1960s era office building on the site...

...“We’d had water infiltration from the central plaza above the subterranean garage. Also, that garage was built back in the 1960s, and we knew something was going to have to be done with it eventually. We looked at repairs but that would only get us 10 or 20 more years,” says Michael Ambre, the interim director for Utah’s Division of Facilities and Construction Management and part of the North Capitol project team. “We also realized that with the North Capitol Building going up, we would be landlocked so to speak, and if we wanted to replace the garage in the future our access would be really restricted.”

Ambre says he presented options for the garage to state legislators who ultimately added funding for the replacement of the garage and central plaza.

“It totally changed our strategy for building the south facade. Now we have a concurrent critical path with the garage, and we are sequencing construction so there are times we can get the lifts in and do the work on that south side,” Jueschke explains...
