People tend to discuss Milwaukee Development more over at SSC, than here at SSP: https://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=4012

Thanks for the heads up to anyone that's interested!

I finally have off this weekend so I'll get out and update with some pictures. Quite a bit of activity happening in and around the central city.

Visited a buddy in Milwaukee this weekend and had the opportunity to take a few pics of some major projects near downtown.

Potential Development Site: My friend works at the US Bank Building and said he saw soil testing on the site south of the Couture site bounded by Lincoln Memorial Dr, Clybourn, and 794 where there have long been rumors of a skyscraper in the works. I'll ask him to take pics if anything starts happening there.

BMO Harris Tower - only a few floors to go before it tops out.

This week should be exciting. Come Friday, Milwaukee can finally put almost a decade of this Couture BS aside and move forward. Milwaukee’s own Chicago Spire.

bucksfan15
Jul 24, 2019, 1:13 AM
For as much as the city of Milwaukee loves to bash the state for the streetcar, they do a mighty fine job getting in their own way. Exhibit A: Milwaukee voting against the streetcar expansion due to the fact that some city alderman didn’t like that their special interest requests weren’t met. The city is ridiculous. It’s frustrating to think where the city could be with different leadership.

Also.....no Couture update.....shocker.

bucksfan15
Jul 24, 2019, 5:49 PM
Let me begin by saying I was a pretty strong streetcar supporter but, the more I think about it, the more laughable Milwaukee’s attempt at fixed rail transit seems. We have a fairly short (and in my opinion useless) starter line. We also have a half finished, now stalled, lakefront line to nowhere with no end of the line in sight. On top of that, we can’t extend the streetcar because of some individual alderman’s little pissing match. AND, the most logical extension, one that would make this system actually useful, going up the densely populated east side, isn’t even on the table. Even if it was, I could see that alderman trying to kill it. It would go through Bauman’s district and we know he isn’t a fan of density or anything that makes his Lake Drive lawyer friends upset. Between the streetcar and the Couture (the L-lines planned terminus), this whole situation has become a laughing stock.

Couture delay could mean $6.7 million bill for county (https://www.jsonline.com/story/money/real-estate/commercial/2019/07/30/couture-delay-could-mean-6-7-million-bill-milwaukee-taxpayers/1865465001/)

As if Rick Barrett taking the taxpayers on a decade-long ride wasn't enough, now he's about to get the taxpayers sued due to his incompetence.

All the while sitting court-side at the Easter Conference Finals in a taxpayer funded arena. Must be nice not caring what you do with other people's money.....

County stands behind Couture project as financing issues continue (https://biztimes.com/county-stands-behind-couture-project-as-financing-issues-continue/)

Milwaukee County is run by a bunch of clowns. But for once, I agree with Bauman...

Alderman Robert Bauman, who represents the downtown area and heads the Public Works Committee, expressed frustration by what he sees as a lack of preparation from the department on an alternative route.

“It is totally incompetent to have not worked on a Plan B starting nine months ago when there were clearly challenges with the financing packages (for The Couture),” he said on Tuesday following a Common Council meeting. “Now we’re up against a deadline, aside from the ridiculous appearance of two stub tracks sitting in the middle of the street, unused. Big money has been spent to build those two lines on Clybourn and Michigan. Probably $10 million has already been spent, and it’s going nowhere. It’s unused. I’m just flabbergasted by it all.”

And Donovan is 100% right...

At least one other city official, Alderman Bob Donovan, has outright called for The Couture project to be abandoned.

“The site should be evaluated, properly packaged, and put out as a request for proposals,” he said. “With all the development going on downtown, surely someone can do better than the nothing we’ve seen for the past seven years.”

Yet Milwaukee County again fails across the board and continues to show its incompetence.

Super disappointed in MSOE. Put up a parking lot next to their new building on the corner of a busy intersection where a pocket park was supposed to go. I hope someone calls them out on this but then again, Milwaukee leaders just bought into ANOTHER Couture delay yesterday. At least one alderman had the balls to call for giving the land to a new developer. I’ve kind of given up on city/county government at this point.

Committee Approves Taller Timber Tower (https://urbanmilwaukee.com/2019/09/17/eyes-on-milwaukee-committee-approves-taller-timber-tower/)

A Common Council committee is pleased with a plan to grow the proposed Ascent apartment tower from 21 to 23 stories.

The Zoning, Neighborhoods & Development Committee unanimously endorsed New Land Enterprises‘ plan to enlarge the proposed mass timber tower in advance of an anticipated April 2020 groundbreaking. The project’s site at 700 E. Kilbourn Ave. is subject to a special zoning district known as a detailed planned development.

With 777 finished and the Couture experiment pretty much over, it will be nice to see a new apartment tower rising in the downtown core. Also worth noting; this will be the tallest mass timber tower in the western hemisphere. Lot's going on in the city, I'll try and get out and get some pics soon!

Yeah the Couture saga is just getting old at this point. The county needs to grow a pair and strip the land from Barrett. Barrett has time and time again proven his incompetence. Sadly, Wangard isn't far behind. I'm not sure which is the longer running joke.....Couture or Water/Brady.

I've been impressed with Foxconn so far. We'll see how that plays out.

Finally getting serious! They have needed this for decades.

Project management team named for city hall (https://www.kenoshanews.com/news/local/project-management-team-named-for-city-hall/article_124d4ee2-9f87-59e9-8be1-d6b87d31e5e5.html)

A Chicago-based project management company will oversee construction of a new city hall, one of the key first steps of Mayor John Antaramian’s proposed $400 million Downtown Vision Project.

Newmark Knight Frank is expected to take the lead in relocating Kenosha’s city hall from 625 52nd St. to the corner of Sheridan Road and 56th Street. The company’s contract was approved this week by the common council.

The building presently located at the site of the new city hall is scheduled to be razed as soon as its occupants find a new home, according to Zohrab Khaligian, a city redevelopment specialist for Community Development and Inspections. It housed the original Kenosha Police Department and most recently the Kenosha Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the Kenosha Public Library’s Administration and Support Center.

Once the site of the new city hall is leveled and construction begins in 2020, the current city hall will be replaced with a new public park and performing arts center. One of three new downtown parking structures is slated at the corner of 52nd Street and Sheridan Road, with luxury, high-rise condominiums planned along 54th Street from Eighth Avenue to Fifth Avenue.

The more the merrier. Good to hear from ya.

There's plenty of us who follow this thread, I just don't spend enough time in Milwaukee to contribute. Appreciate any and all updates you can provide.

While I appreciate the optimism about that beautiful building, it is difficult for me to feel any sort of enthusiasm for that parcel or any neighboring parcel given how I feel that the citizens of our beloved city have been routinely bent over by the likes of Marcoux, Abele, Barret-Lo, Marcus, POP, Foxcon, Johnson Controls, et al.

Things that will happen in Milwaukee before this parcel (or the Couture) are developed;

Giannis signs a 10 year deal at max money
Bucks win a NBA championship
Yelich signs a 10 year deal for Mike Trout money
Brewers win a World Series
Prohibition returns
Bars run out of pull-tabs

Milwaukee Streetcar's Lakefront Line Delayed By Construction Project (https://www.wpr.org/milwaukee-streetcars-lakefront-line-delayed-construction-project)

After being pressed by Bauman for a date, Marcoux said he wanted to give Barrett until mid-2020 to break ground on the Couture before moving forward with another option for the streetcar.

Can't LOL at this enough.

For once, I'm with Bauman. Rick Barrett is making the city and county look like bigger fools than they already are.

Richard Barrett, who operates Barrett Lo, said the overdue bill was "an oversight on our part that we were made aware of on Friday."

So shady. Must be nice to be sitting court-side at the Eastern Conference Finals while your almost half a million delinquent in property taxes. Milwaukee's leaders should be ashamed of themselves.

With the Couture dead and still a few months removed from Ascent's groundbreaking, there's been relatively no news regarding new Milwaukee skyscrapers/high-rises, so here is a high rise being built in suburban Wauwatosa...

St. Camillus breaks ground on residential tower project (https://biztimes.com/st-camillus-breaks-ground-on-residential-tower-project/)

This project was supposed to exceed 20 stories but NIMBYs helped shut that down and we ended up with a 15 story tower.

:haha:

Even so, we all know it's not worth reading too much into. Barrett is probably just looking to buy time until his next annual "Breaking ground next summer" announcement. I can't believe people are still buying into this BS after all the lies Barrett has sold the city on since the beginning of this disaster.

Tell you what. I live in Spokane, Washington now. I'll keep reading, you keep watching. I bet I'll know first.

In any event, life is too short and it's all so good. One project out of dozens hasn't yet happened, but even it is looking good.

I'm actually more prone to believe this because Barrett has actually been refusing to comment on this or provide their own "construction is imminent" PR release. $20 Million of equity isn't even that much money to come up with when the government is giving you that much more more and the land for pretty much free...

Work ramps up for Ascent mass timber tower in Milwaukee (https://www.bizjournals.com/milwaukee/news/2020/01/07/work-ramps-up-for-ascent-mass-timber-tower-in.html)

New Land Enterprises this month will start taking down the former Edwardo’s restaurant building in Milwaukee and driving foundation piles to prepare for construction on what could become North America’s tallest mass timber building.

That Ascent tower would stand 23 stories with 231 apartments at East Kilbourn Avenue and North Van Buren Street. The parking structure on its lower level will be made of concrete, but its upper housing floors will have a structure of manufactured timber columns and beams, and wooden floors and ceilings. It is a more environmentally friendly construction material that is gaining momentum internationally.

Title of the article seems very misleading. Alderman ready to move on and nobody in the industry thinks this is happening. Dude's been taking Milwaukee County taxpayers on a decade-long ride.

Milwaukee officials expect ‘good news’ on Couture project by end of June (https://biztimes.com/milwaukee-officials-expect-good-news-on-couture-project-by-end-of-june/)

But at least one Common Council member said the city has waited long enough, and has promised to put forward a directive that would ultimately sever ties between the development and an idle downtown streetcar extension.

He noted the line extension is about three-quarters finished, and now has to wait for the Couture to move forward before the “loop” at the development site can be installed. He said due to the Couture construction schedule, it could be another 18 months before the extension is up and running.

Bauman also said that, through his conversations with the commercial real estate community, it seems other developers are skeptical the Couture project could even work.

“No developer in Milwaukee thinks this building will be built,” he said. “Nobody, and they’ve got very specific reasons for that, which make a lot of sense in terms of the building design, the amount of rentable space, the mix of units, on and on and on.”

Rick Barrett is a joke. I hope this is his last hurrah.

The county taxpayers were on the hook for almost $7,000,000 to the Feds because Barrett and Lo didn't get this building done (much less even started) by 2020. I've not heard anything if the county paid, if so, they had better be taking these two squatters to court to recoup our money! Now that Able is no longer County Exec, Crowley needs to start putting the squeeze on this or move on to an actual builder who would love to use that space.

Downtown Milwaukee seems to be a very charming place and apparently it's regarded highly for its inhabitants way before "flight back to city" to become a trend. It's in a better shape and more populated than the ones of cities much bigger (Cleveland or Detroit).

The Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra celebrated the completion of their Bradley Symphony Center with a live performance on October 2. The $89 million project began in June 2018. It centered around the restoration of the original 1930's Warner Grand Theater movie palace, along with the adjacent office tower renovation and three distinct additions. Milwaukee PBS aired a special on it - pretty neat stuff, including the deepening of the stage by physically moving the existing historic exterior façade closer to the street behind (also shown in the video below, around the 6 minute mark) -
