Quilmes is the municipal seat and largest city of Quilmes county. It was founded in 1666 and officially became a city in 1916.

Its name comes from the Quilmes people (Kilmes), an indigenous tribe of Tucumán province, which was defeated in the 17th century after resisting 130 years and forced by the Spaniards to move to walk more than 1200 km to the today's Quilmes city.
In Quilmes are not descendants of that tribe (they were considered extinct in 1812). But there are a few descendants living in Tucumán, their province of origin.

The city has a coastline of more than 6 km, where the once longest pier in South America is located, with a total length of 540 m.

Some of the entities that stand out in Quilmes City are: a base of the Argentine Air Force, the Quilmes AC and the CA Argentino de Quilmes, two of the oldest football teams in Argentina (both founded in the 19th century), the St. George's College, founded in 1898 (it is among the most exclusive and upper-class schools in Argentina and in Latin America, and the first boarding school established in Latin America), and the Quilmes Brewery (the oldest operating brewery in Argentina, founded in 1888 by Otto Bemberg, a German immigrant). This city is also an important industrial area.
