Schindler is setting new standards in the high-rise business

Schindler will supply
83 elevators, including 40 double-deck elevators and 41 escalators, for the 490 meter (1600 feet) high International Commerce Centre in Hong Kong. Containing elevator shafts longer than any existing building in the world. Schindler secured this major order against tough competition because of its advanced technology and its ability to provide elevators that grow with the building during the
construction phase.

490 meters (1600 feet) and 118 stories high-when completed in 2010 the International Commerce Centre will be one of the world's tallest buildings and the highest building in the city of Hong Kong. The skyscraper will be built by one of Hong Kong's most important investors and construction companies, Sun Hung Kai Properties Ltd. The building’s unique, cutting-edge design is by Kohn Pederson Fox Associates PC of New York in collaboration with local architect partnership Wong & Ouyang Ltd.
Prime address, excellent public transportation connections
The International Commerce Centre will stand at the tip of West Kowloon, overlooking enchanting Hong Kong Harbor. Union Square, the development of which the building is part, is located on top of the Kowloon MTR subway station and therefore has excellent public transportation connections. From here it takes only 3 minutes to Hong Kong Island and 20 minutes to the international airport.
The tower's architectural qualities as well as its exposed position are sure to make it one of the sights of the vast Union Square Development. Currently under construction and measuring 1.2 km2 (1.2 million square feet) it rivals Canary Wharf in London's former docklands. Union Square consists of residential accommodation, office buildings, hotels, shopping centers, and a large leisure complex. One of its major attractions is
Asia's largest indoor shopping mall. Furthermore, the six-star
Ritz Carlton Hotel will be located in the International Commerce Centre and
will have its lobby at 425 meter (1400 feet) above ground making it one of the highest hotels within a building in the world.
State-of-the-art elevator technology in the International Commerce Center

Schindler 7000 elevators, including 40 double-deck elevators, 18 high-speed elevators, and one heavy-duty freight elevator. With a
vertical travel of 396 meters (1300 feet), the fastest double-deck elevator will have a speed of
9 meters per second. To ensure a smooth and fast flow for passengers, the Schindler 7000 double deck elevators will be equipped with the latest generation of Schindler's trailblazing Miconic 10 destination control system. Schindler will also supply 24 machine-room-less and low-speed elevators as well as 41 escalators.
Vertical transportation for the large number of passengers in the building will be mainly by double-deck elevators. With this type of elevator, two cars in a single hoistway are arranged on top of each other in a frame and often serve two floors simultaneously. This allows twice as many passengers to be transported as in a hoistway of the same size with only one car. This elevator technology in combination with the new Schindler Miconic 10 guarantees optimal and cost-efficient access to this landmark building. The double-deck and high-speed elevators as well as Schindler Miconic 10 will be developed and manufactured by Schindler in Switzerland.
A major challenge for Schindler will be the use of jump elevators. These internal builder's elevators will be used instead of builder's hoists on the facade. Called jump elevators, these are built into the existing elevator hoistways and «grow» with the building. Jump elevators are so called because these elevators «jump» in stages of 5 to 10 stories. The benefits of jump elevators are that passengers and light materials can be transported faster. The vertical transportation takes place in the core of the building so the building shell can be closed and protected against the weather sooner.
However, before the International Commercial Centre is inaugurated and the elevators run smoothly, Schindler still has to provide several challenges key services including professional project management and close collaboration with the customers regarding production, jobsite logistics and installation of the elevators and escalators. By meeting the high specifications for ride comfort and quietness in the double-deck and high-speed elevators, Schindler will set a new standard.

I'd say they're trying to, but they're keeping this on the down low. We have the same problem in Philadelphia, where the Comcast Center is almost a 1000-feet (975'), but hte reason why they won't extend it to 1000'+ is because of finances. I still have faith that teh Comcast Center will be over 1000'!!!
