A few days in AMSTERDAM, Nederland

I spent a few days in Amsterdam for work, and was very pleased with the city and Nederland in general.

I first landed in the port and De Wallen, but was staying in Plantage, in a canal house converted into a private hotel. I wandered in the inner city, mostly around De Pijp, Jordaan, Museumkwartier, Grachtengordel, Marken, Kadijken and Westelijke Eilanden.

I also had a few professional activities planned in Delft and Rotterdam. I may create another thread to show these places.

I like the historic Flemish architecture too. It is sophisticated. The Benelux is a great people well educated and full of talent.
They could easily afford more modern trams, though. We have some for sale in France.

Great photos of one of my favorite European cities! I haven't been there in literally decades, but I still have very good memories of it.

As an aside, Dutch traffic lights remind me of US train signals.

I also love the different interpretations of the typical canal house throughout the eras. When I was there last summer, I took particular notice of all the great Art Deco and early mid-century design in the city. It is as though it was the last new "style" that was widely constructed around the city center before the war and subsequent reappreciation of all the historic architecture (in contrast to Rotterdam, where the city fully embraced modernism).

I observed this too, and I wish we had done the same at a similar scale as Amsterdam with the french-canadian vernacular. Learning about the Amsterdam School, and also the taxation systems that were based on the width of a building's frontage was enlightening.

I was surprised to learn that this chinese-looking building was built in 1984 (it is called the Sea Palace). There was a guide there, whom I overheard, telling an urban legend that the building was originally conceived as a restaurant that could hold up to 900 guests, and that on the opening night, after greeting 700 people, it started to sink. Well. That's that.

I visited Amsterdam for the first time this past June. I figured I would enjoy visiting the city, but I ended up liking it way more than I anticipated. I definitely plan to return in the not-too-distant future.
