LYON FRANCE--Avoid the Tourist Masses!

I spent six days with my wife, younger son & his girlfriend in Lyon last year. I had always been intrigued by Lyon, given it's situation between two rivers (ala Manhattan). The Rhone is on the east side and the Saone is on the west. The distance between the two rivers in the center city is only about one-half mile. We fell in love with the city--the architecture rivals Paris, but with a more interesting setting of rivers and hills. Plus the city is so compact that it's incredibly easy to get around--they have four subway lines plus numerous streetcar lines. My four years of french from way back came back to me pretty well and I was able to converse with the locals comfortably. Day trip possibilities from the city are bountiful given the proximity to The Alps (1 hour east), plus the Cote De Rhone and Beaujolais wine regions south and north of the city, respectively.
The biggest benefit: It's not overwhelmed by tourists!!

We took the metro to the south end of the center city, towards the confluence of the Saone & Rhone Rivers. This area is vastly different in character from the historic city, with lots of new developments. I suspect this area had been an older industrial area that has been redeveloped.

Lyon is considered to be the Gastromomic capital of France, famous for fresh markets and world-class chefs. Les Halles de Lyon Paul Bocuse is a famous indoor market:

Took the Metro to the city's southeast side to see the Musee Lumiere, dedicated to the Lumiere Brothers. They manufactured photography equipment and film and were pioneers of motion pictures in the late 1890s.

Wonderful tour! Lyon is one of my favorite cities in Europe. We spent a couple of days there in 2018 before boarding a river cruise down the Rhone at the Confluence.
