Not really. Some cities might have massive companies (Seattle, Bay Area, etc.) with huge market caps or revenues but most F500/ F1000 companies are major employers which is what ultimately matters to most people.

For all the flight of big company HQs from the north to the sunbelt generally in recent decades, I'm pleasantly surprised at how much Cleveland/NE Ohio still punches above it's weight. Out of the Great Lakes region only Chicago (of course) and Minneapolis have more Fortune 1000s. The way the narrative is usually spun, you'd think we'd be well under places like Charlotte and Nashville.

I agree that this ranking doesn't directly reflect local impact.

However some of the really huge companies have enormous impact. Those giant techs often have tens of thousands of local workers each, and average pay well into the six figures -- meaning several billion in local payrolls.

Most companies outside the top one hundred, let alone at the bottom of the list, have tiny fractions of that.

Well, to be sure, The Bay Area has lost Bank of America, McKesson, Charles Schwab, Tesla, Oracle and Chevron, all major global corporate brands, and other as well. If those corporate relocations hadn't happened, the region would probably have around 90-100 F1000s, maybe even more. The saving grace that the Bay Area has that LA and really everywhere else does not have is the constant stream of high profile tech startups that go public and become billion-dollar companies, many of their founders moving here to jump start their companies. For how long is that going to happen is really anyone's guess at this point.

What fascinates me is how DC Metro, understandably, is in the top 10 most Fortune1000 companies, yet DC proper is tied with places like LA and Tulsa with just five. I would think the idea of being walking distance from Congress and the White House would be appealing enough to be there as opposed to Mclean or Arlington, even though the latter is a short Metro ride away.

Los Angeles has always underperformed on the Fortune lists. A couple of years ago I aggregated the number of Fortune 500s by metro area as of 1984. Even back then Los Angeles had fewer F500s than San Francisco-San Jose, and it was waaaaay behind NYC and Chicago:

A couple years ago Larry Ellison said Oracle would move to Nashville, and they are in the process of spending billions on a new campus (while simultaneously laying off tens of thousands of workers and borrowing heavily for data center expansions, but I digress). The HQ is still in Austin for now, but everything points to it eventually being Nashville eventually as long as the city continues to bend over backwards to give them whatever they want.

^^ Thanks for the 1994 comparison. Cleveland was punching above it's weight on this metric back then too. 21 in the CSA (CLE-Akron-Canton-Wooster) back then compared to 19 today. Certainly not the "flight to the sunbelt" that people would have expected. The only one I know we lost during that time was Eaton, who moved their legal HQ to Dublin, Ireland, but still kept their entire HQ workforce in a new building in Cleveland.

LA is extremely vulnerable to fortune 500 HQ loss. It belies the true economic weight of LA. SpaceX for example was founded and has its main workforce in LA. They just went public with a 75 billion IPO this week but the HQ is now symbolically in Texas to avoid taxes and Musks hatred of California. Regardless you have every rocket startup being founded in LA because of SpaceX. Same with Northrup Grumman.

Actually a lot of the spacecraft industry is elsewhere, such as Seattle. Literally most communciations spacecraft in orbit Starlink, Kuiper...) have been built here.

Aeronautics shifted to LA because it was relatively close to...nothing. In the jet age they had to test stuff where nobody lived. Early jet engines were WAY louder than they are now, plus they needed long dirt runways and plenty of room to crash. Previously, things were tested in and above the medium-populated Industrial Midwest. For example, this giant 15x4 mile patch of Indiana will never see human habitation again because it is pockmarked with unexploded ordinances:

Yes, at least five of DFW were relocated from LA - CBRE, Flour, Jacob, Tenet and Public Storage, at least 1 of Houston, Oxy, and I think one or 2l of the defense companies from DC were relocated from LA.

Beyond that, Rocketlabs valuation is approaching SpaceX at $68B. They poached a lot of Musk's employees when he said he was moving to Texas. On Rocketlabs heels is Anduril at $61B. When they IPO, LA may reach crazy levels with housing costs as if it wasn't bad now.

SpaceX created between 2500-3000 millionaires overnight in the LA area alone last week. For comparison to Google's IPO in 2004, that one created 900 in the bay area overnight.
