hkskyline's 2025 in SOUTHERN NORWAY's picturesque towns and cities

While southern Norway doesn't have picturesque tall mountains like in the west and north, they have many small towns by the sea with beautiful white wooden houses. This area became an important trading centre in the 16th century, with foreigners especially the Danish, Dutch, and British coming for oak and pine, which is used to build houses and ships.

The houses along the coast were originally not painted in white, but were inspired by white-painted houses abroad. The wealthy thought imported white paint from England was a status symbol, and soon the towns became covered in white.

Here are 2 towns I did as a day trip from Kristiansand.

Mandal

Flekkefjord

Interesting. Thanks. Some of these northern European towns with a lot of recent development almost seem like they could be the US, if the US would just legalize more urbanism.

Consider me adequately charmed! Lovely! Beyond their charm though, Norwegian cities of all sizes have always seemed to punch well above their weight in terms of urban fabric. Hope to visit someday!

Kristiansand was founded in 1641 by King Christian IV, who ruled both Norway and Denmark. It quickly became a major seaport and was my base to explore the southern coast. The city centre is small and the attractions are easily reachable on foot. There aren't that many things to do here but it's a good base to continue exploring the various towns nearby.

I saw quite a lot of residential areas in the city centre, and with water surrounding 3 sides, a lot of residents can enjoy beautiful views.

Just a short bus ride from Arendal's town centre (route 102) is Raet National Park, which covers 607 square km along the coast, including the sea. Created in 2016, the landscape stems from retreating glaciers from around 12,000 years ago that deposited stone, sand, gravel, and more.

Just a block from Kristiansand's pedestrian shopping street is the cathedral, which was built in the 1880s in the late Gothic style. With enough seats for 1800 people, making it the country's 3rd largest.

Being on the sea coast, I expected a bustling fish market with lots of choices. I was surprised Fiskebrygga was very organized, quiet, and clean. This is not a wholesale market but more a place for tourists and locals to do their grocery shopping or grab a bite in one of many restaurants.

Just a short walk away, Kilden Theater and Concert Hall opened in 2012, featuring undulating wooden walls made of local oak so visitors will move from a natural landscape to an artistic one.

Next door, the national grain authority wanted to build an emergency storage in the city, resulting in the construction of the silo in the 1930s. Grain imported from abroad was stored here with a capacity of 15,000 tons. While the mill that used the grain closed in 2008, the city, in 2016, decided to repurpose the silo into a new art museum, with construction beginning in 2019. Kunstsilo opened in 2024.

Odderoya was previously a naval base but now turned into a huge park just a short walk from Kristiansand's city centre. You can still find old defensive structures alongside beautiful views of the city, the islands, and the sea.

In addition to its military past, the island was also a quarantine centre in the 19th century.

Did you go inside the silo museum beyond the lobby? It looks like you took a nice upshot from a ground floor. I have been researching museums in Norway lately!

No I just visited the lobby and gift shop. I spent most of my time exploring nearby towns rather than deep dive into Kristiansand's attractions.
