It's just a pity it's Dialog that's handling the design.

It always seems to be the "safe" architects that get selected to do these landmark tower projects.

By the end of the next decade we could have as many as four to five 65-75 storey tall towers along that stretch of Kingsway between this tower, Concord's Grand Tower, Anthem's Citizen down the road, and Keltic's proposed 70 storey tower at the Esso station on Kingsway and Wilingdon.

I didn't realize before that this tower's geodetic height 1,279 ft, thanks to it's Metrotown location will actually be higher than Burnaby mountain (1,214-ft-tall), meaning it's rooftop observation deck will practically be at eye-level with SFU's Burnaby Mountain campus buildings.

That's just nuts!

More ground level renderings too.

6 elevators, only 3 go to the very top. Surprised they don't have more penthouses.

No reason the timelines can't be brought forward when the right market conditions come along, which will need to happen if they intend to build that much office space over the next phases. (and of course they'll likely pivot on the office component if that market doesn't ever recover)

its a shame they couldnt hit the 300m (super-tall) mark. it would have been really cool to get a super-tall skyscraper in Burnaby.

looking at the density chart, they could have done it as they aren't even close to maxing out the site potential. and they appear to have no height limit either.

but i love this tower, i love the art deco-esque of it. brings that manhattan feel, similar to how i like the 1444 Alberni development.

overall, big fan. only thing that is sad is the non-super-tall status when it might have been possible.

That would be pretty cool, but this tower is already going be incredibly prominent. Metrotown is a similar elevation to the top of Little Mountain, so an almost 900' tower there is going to really standout. You'll probably be able to see it from most parts of the region.

Burnaby's Intense Race to the Sky is Making Edmonton and its Stantec Tower Sweat

The Current Tallest building in Western canada will be dethroned by a Suburb of Vancouver,

Metro Vancouver has like 83 downtowns

I strongly believe that we will eventually see a true supertall (300m or over) not just in our lifetime, but I'd even predict we'll see one proposed within the next 10-15 years.

Consider the fact that as recently as 10 years ago, we didn't have any towers over 200m tall - with the Shangri-La being the king of the heap (for almost 2 decades now) at just under that 200m mark.

And yet in that 10 year time period we've had proposals and permit applications put through for 12 and counting now, with one just completed (Gilmore Place 2 - dethroning Shangri-La) and another currently under construction and due to take oer the crown when it tops out next year.
And within the next 10 years as these various proposals go through the permitting processes and their construction starts, none of the current reigning "tallest" will retain that status for any longer than 3-5 years before getting dethroned by the next tallest (as noted previously the current reigning tallest Gilmore Place 2 will likely be dethroned my Concord's Grand Tower next year, and then depending on when Pinnacle's Lougheed project get's their construction start (hopefully late this year), that reign likely may not be longer than 5 years).

I wouldn't even be surprised of the GVA gets it's first supertall tower in the normally maligned (in these parts anyway) Downtown of Vancouver where there are still many places that don't fall within the Viewcone tyranny of tower height restrictions that you could build such a tower.
Even though chances are that it will most likely happen in the 'burbs.

My money is on either Surrey or Metrotown.

Metrotown would seem the most likely, but my money is on Surrey.

I have a vague recollection of a supertall in the early stages of proposal development for Surrey circa 2007/2008 prior to the real estate market crash.

The Barazan tower. Seems like they got distracted with their Sasquatch Mountain projects instead.

Bingo! Thanks for that, here's the thread. Seems pretty similar to this proposal, hopefully the McCarthy's don't go buy a failing ski hill and distract themselves...

i do think we will as well. i do wish it was this project for a few, key reasons though.
  • having an observation deck, few buildings have that around here. i doubt if we get a "billionaires row" type building, itll have that.
  • the architecture of the tower. most buildings in this region are boring, uninteresting or just ugly. and i like art deco/manhattan style architecture. so this building having hit super tall, would have been awesome.

Nothing new but some comments from the developer.

Quote:
As for next steps on the McCarthy tower, the immediate focus is getting the site rezoned, McCarthy said. "We're working on a timeline right now to try to get through all the rezoning of the site between now and June."

Asked about the current status of the market and launching such a bold project amid economic and presale uncertainty, McCarthy said they don't have any special insights.

"We don't know anything that the market doesn't know," he said. "Right now, it's a tough market, I think, particularly for pre-sale condos.

"We've planned this project over a number of years, so we're carrying forward with our vision. It's still a long road ahead before we'll be able to deliver this project, so we plan to pick the right moment in time when the market is ready to respond to something like our project.”

with that new proposal in downtown at 315m (1033ft), this being bumped up to 320m (1050ft) would be awesome. one can always dream

Was it 258.4m to the top floor or the crown?

EDIT: Found the diagram it's 258.4 to the top of the paraphet.
