[Dartmouth] Mount Hope Village (Southdale FGN) | U/C

Clayton Developments is requesting to initiate the secondary planning strategy for Southdale Future Growth Node. These greenfield lands are located between Highway 111, Mount Hope Avenue, Gaston Road and Fenwick Street. Much of the area is taken up by a wetland so most of the development will be on the northern end of the property. It will be a mix of housing types totalling ~700 units. There will be eight low-rise multi-unit buildings.

Wasn't this one of the alternate locations being considered for a stadium?

What wasn't, though? I think that ship has sailed for a while.

This looks like the Mk. II version of Highfield Park.

I really like the small homes, they look nothing like Highfield Park.

And.. cue the people who don't want anything built on greenfield sites, "No True Scotsmen" style arguments about why only the most affordable housing construction helps with affordability, and so on:

https://www.halifaxexaminer.ca/city-hall...cerns-about-development-next-to-wetland/

Do many parcels of this size with no nearby wetlands/lakes/water even exist around the city?

"I'm not against development, I'm just against THIS development!"

Of course since it is an Examiner article one must take it with several large grains of salt. Not everything they publish can be considered factual or wholly accurate.

With these arguments, nobody should build anything anywhere, because it will always affect something. Yet our population continues to grow, along with housing costs.

I suppose tent encampments would have the smallest effect on the surroundings, so there's that...

Some street names have been issued for this area;

Leonamarie Drive
Noah Avenue
Kassi Lane

Looks like the first buildings will be townhouses on Noah Avenue.

The first block of houses are now occupied. I didn't see any signs of multi-unit buildings underway.

Permits have been submitted for the first multi-unit building of 65 units. This will be at the corner of Mount Hope Avenue and Leonamarie Drive.

I have searched both here and elsewhere without success for info about the odd-looking development off Mt Hope Ave in Dartmouth/Southdale that seems to be all rather utilitarian 2 and 3-storey semi-detached townhouses. They seem almost Soviet-style with identical exteriors and minimal surrounding amenities. There is a Streetview image created by someone (not Google, which is something I didn't know could happen) that shows it from this past January with many units occupied. Is there a thread on this here?

Those are butt ugly, aren't they? Interesting fact about those... they are modular, factory built with each cube affixed in place on site. Like how they build cruise ships.

I moved a couple of posts here.

On a side note if anyone is ever searching for a particular thread there is a search function on the main Halifax Local page on the right-side under the advertisement. For some reason the search doesn't include thread titles so I recommend searching "by posts".

Ya I drive by there from time to time and agree with their butt uglieness. Yuu'd think/hope with all the hype around modular homes that the first few they plop in a city they'd really want to make attractive.

I’m pretty sure I searched for “Mount Hope” along with the names of the new streets there and nothing came up. I think I searched in the Suburbs section though.I think the discussion for this development should be there as it obviously isn’t Halifax Peninsula or downtown.

As a separate issue, all the stickies in the Suburbs board are not helpful. I don’t know what would be better given the large scope of that, but that’s a lot of categories to try to browse.
