The City's Planning Dept has notified the public of an OP amendment, zoning and site plan application to build a 60-storey tower at 829 Carling Ave at Preston Street, where the current CIBC Bank now sits.

The tower will be Ottawa's tallest building and contain 459 units.

Claridge (unless things have changed since 2018)

http://www.juteaujohnsoncomba.com/newsletters/2018/June-2018-Newsletter-April-Sales.pdf

829 Carling Avenue was purchased by
Claridge Homes (March Rd Phase 5)
Inc. from Ontario & Central Properties
Inc. (Metrus Properties) for $6,700,000
or $411 per square foot of site area. It is
improved with a two-storey CIBC
branch and 21 paved surface parking
spaces. It is located within 600 metres of
the Carling transit station. It previously
sold in 2016 for $3,660,661 or $224 per
square foot of site area.

Maybe Claridge should focus on finishing their building across the street before using the leftover materials to build this one?

So is this ignoring the Trinity Centre or do they say this because that's not built yet either?

This being Ottawa, I'm expecting the west face to be a 200m blank wall in preparation for another 60 storey tower to be built wall to wall beside it at the dow Honda site..

The base looks horrendous in renders, i can't possibly imagine what it'd be like in real life and gosh, this color pattern! I don't wanna sound like a Karen, but this is one of the ugliest buildings I've ever seen and I sincerely hope for a architecture overhaul.

Should we just post our condolences now, or later?

On a positive note, it would be annihilating a CIBC branch.

I for sure thought this was a (very) early April Fool's.

We all expected the height in this location, not opposed to it, but not sure about the design. Will wait to see some more high-res and diverse renders before chiming in, although if it is Claridge I won't hold my breath..

I wish the CIBC Block would be more mid-rise and have the supertall 50+ towers where tesla is and closer to the station. I don't think having 2 supertall tower on each side of Preston will look great at all.

I will hold my opinions until we can see some better renderings of this but the design does seem a bit weird. What's with that strange "setback" about a 3rd the way up the building. Looks like a "setforward" actually.

Can't we just copy one of the projects in Toronto and save on the design process entirely. Wouldn't Aura or Harbour Plaza look great at this location??

Aura has been a disaster. Not something to emulate.

I hadn't heard that....though a quick Google search and I learned of some of their issues. I'm thinking more exterior design rather than services/utilities and the interior living conditions. But yeah, sounds like it has been a bit of a nightmare over at Aura.

It's sad to see what developers are building in places in Mississauga and Surrey compared to here. Sad. Ottawa has no ambition.

It visually looks great - just everything inside is a mess. If only Ottawa could get that visually looks great part.

Ever notice how there aren't any designer brand stores in Ottawa? Whereas if you go to Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto they're everywhere. Ottawa is cheap. Don't expect high-end stuff if no one is going to pay for it. I love Ottawa but this is the sad truth.

I agree, but this is slowly changing as Ottawa keeps becoming a bigger city. Just take a stroll downtown near Byward. Before, we would barely see luxury cars. Now you actually see some (not saying I prefer those cars - but just what people are willing to spend). Eventually, Ottawa has to leave the city but small town mentality. It just takes awhile.

I agree the rendering/design isn't all too great. But 60 floors beside the Icon brings some good height and variation between the two tallest towers outside of the Trinity Towers.

I would have been more annoyed if this being built on 845 Carling as that wastes a beautiful design that's already approved. If they can do this somewhat better than the Icon (hoping..), then it's fine.

Also if Richcraft sells their land/approved design of the The Sky at 845 Carling to a developer willing to build... then the area quickly becomes a hot pocket of density. 60, 55, and 45*2 story towers in that vicinity would be crazy at how it would look at a distance (heck, even beside it).

Granted, it is not perfect and I would prefer better - but bigger picture for me is this is more helpful than not. It would definitely push more development in the direct area considering how many people would be there. And it's across from the hospital, so the area is getting developed at the very least.

Designer brands are often 'hype' in my mind.. Designer brand clothing etc is made side by side by much cheaper priced products.

Everybody has different priorities but the lack of designer brand clothes doesn't even register on the radar for me.
