The Allentown neighborhood is the area of city blocks surrounding Allen Street, which runs approximately 1 km long and is about 1.5 km north of downtown Niagara Square. Allentown development dates back to the late 1820s, and the oldest existing structures dating from the 1830s. The area has been known for decades as an arts and entertainment area, and for its eclectic residents. For many decades it also served as the center of the Buffalo gay community.
