UNIBAIL-RODAMCO unveils new "Tours Sisters" planned to replace "Tour Phare"

09/21/2015

Only one week sufficed for Unibail-Rodamco to unveil the project set to replace the "Tour Phare" located on Place Carpeau, behind the CNIT. Instead, the company plans to build two towers named "Sisters" which will span over 1.022.571 square feet. The first tower, which will rise at 657 feet (50+ floors), will offer 807.293 square feet of offices and the second one, a 300-bedroom-4-stars hotel will rise at 328 feet and span over 215.278 square feet. The two towers will be linked at 262 feet of height by a 3-floor bridge housing a spa, a restaurant, a cinema and an open air garden.

Christian de Portzamparc was chosen to take over. {...} The new project will be less expensive, costing 630 million € instead of the 900 million € planned for "Tour Phare".

Unibail-Rodamco which hopes to be able to inaugurate these towers in 2021 plans to file the construction permit application at the beginning of 2016. The company assures that if the administrative procedures would not go through or if any other major problems came in the way, they would go back to the "Tour Phare" project which has a permit still valid for four more years.

There are quality renderings on the site of the project.

https://www.sisters.fr/en/

Like these.

The smaller tower is a hotel, the taller offices. There'll be a restaurant and other amenities for the hotel in the deck linking both buildings. Maybe a restaurant or something like retail at ground level too.

If mediocre politicians don't ruin all initiatives because of the upcoming presidential election over here, construction should begin sometime this year. Most likely by late 2017, they say.

Interesting and unique! I like the first set of renders where the taller tower appears not to have a flat roof, but even the newer ones are nice. Very interesting how they have interrupted the volumes with both curved and straight lines, and visually this points your attention down, which is the opposite of what most towers do. And it works.

You've almost got the same drilling sensitive eye as that of this architect on the French forum.

Quote:
I think that guy is a subtle pro and he's a mod out there, though. He's also good at playing with the language. It's a bit hard to relate, but he basically says these are just less ambitious (much less controversial too) than Thom Mayne's project that should've been built there, but possibly more elegant for better integrated to the surroundings, reminding of the angular (straight) lines of the neighboring arch by the central deck, while still showing sweater feminine round curves to the other sides of it. Mayne's design was sort of feminine indeed. It looked like someone pregnant to me. Some of us are missing it for sure.

And we're losing some office room anyway. This is many less offices than what was originally ordered. In the meantime, we're getting an interesting hotel and some luxury "serviced apartments" to screw the rich anyhow, which is interesting as well.

(Translated from French to English)

Ever since Tour First's inauguration back in 2011, no tower in La Défense had reached a height higher than 200M (656FT).
Construction is set to begin on September 2018. The project will feature two towers reaching heights at 722FT and 397FT.

Other current pictures of the smaller tower (student housing)

Cladding isn't all that great.... But let's face it, it's student housing... Budget wasn't exactly great either...
