Crazy east coast US sunset on June 23

Last night a strong summer storm blew through DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia (and maybe New York?) just before sunset. The rain scrubbed pollutants from the air and left dramatic low-hanging clouds over the city just exactly in time for a spectacular sunset. It looked like the apocalypse.

Basically everyone on the east coast was out taking pictures of it. Share what you got.

Here's mine, from my cellphone, in Georgetown.

Hi Cirrus,

Pictures don't do it justice. I was in NYC and also noticed how eerie the sunset was yesterday.

I should have taken one. I also saw the same sunset though as I was getting off.

I'm betting the dust that floated over from Africa yesterday had something to do with it. While this story is about it's affect on Texas, you can see the bands of dust hitting the East Coast in their animation:

Awesome mother nature - always has been, and always will be - in charge. Despite what ignorant fools might think because they could not be bothered to inform themselves of the facts, perhaps they find the truth inconvenient. Some things are self evident but only if you are open to it and not actively blocking it out.

It most certainly made its way up to NYC. We got hit with one of those ferocious but quick thunder-pours around 6 PM, and by around 8 it had cleared up nicely. I got on the subway to go to Union Square a little after that, and this is what I came back above ground to... I just stopped on the stairs there to take it in:

And because why not, here's one of the downpour:

Immediately after:

Gotta love those super unstable days!

Those are great. I've been making it a personal rule to take my camera with me in the evenings when I have to go run an errand every night around the same time. There's a park across the street from where we go, and the view is nice. I've made the best of it by going out and being eaten alive by mosquitoes while I snap a few pics in that magical 20 minutes or so before sunset. I love it when sunsets bathe everything in a glow like that. The sensation is almost physical.

I remember a particularly awesome one years ago when I was living on the Upper West Side. I walked home from Rock Center through the park to take it in. Purple and pink and orange, with the bottoms of big cumulonimbus clouds.

Something like this but with amazing colors:
