Slide The City

1,000 foot water slide coming to Ottawa?

By Keaton Robbins, Ottawa Sun
First posted: Tuesday, January 27, 2015 04:59 PM EST | Updated: Tuesday, January 27, 2015 10:11 PM EST

Ottawa could be hosting a 1,000 foot slip and slide street party, once the snow melts.

Slide the City, a massive water slide party equipped with live music and water gun fights said they're looking to bring the popular event to the nation's capital this summer.

"We're still trying to find a suitable site, but I'm confident we'll be able to do it," Wyatt Grow, Slide the City's eastern Canada's regional director told the Sun. "The City of Ottawa's tone has been encouraging but they have some concerns with where it will be."

Dan Chenier, general manager, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services in Ottawa confirmed to the Sun that Slide the City has applied to host the gigantic water party later on this summer.

"The City has received an application regarding this activity however, no approvals have been granted and no permits have been issued at this time," he said in an e-mail.

No street location has been announced for the slide that's 1,000 feet by 16 feet and stretches the length of three (American) football fields.

Grow wouldn't say which street they applied to host the event but wants to make sure they pick the right spot.

"We had people from Sparks St. call us a little while back (about hosting the event) but the street didn't have that big of a slope," said Grow. "We have two or three streets in the city with acceptable inclines. Worst comes to worst, we'll go to Gatineau or out of town for a hill."

Set up costs are around $100,000 when the slide, padding and hose system are all taken into account.

The Ottawa event will be capped at 5,000 people with 1,500 VIP tickets being sold.

Grow said they will be hitting up a handful of cities in Ontario and Quebec including Toronto, Montreal,

Quebec City, Windsor, and Drummondville for their 200th anniversary celebration.

Excited Ottawans are encouraged to sign up for the event's newsletter, which will notify you as soon as registration for the party opens up.

The first ever Slide the City took place on July 19, 2014 in Salt Lake City, UT.

And if you're wondering how much Ottawa's edition will cost, Grow said prices start at $15 for a single slide, $30 for three rides and VIP ticket will be $50-55, which gave an hour of exclusive sliding, lunch, plus a T-shirt and hat.

That was my first thought.... works for the (old fashioned) go-kart races... but would it not be almost too steep ??

Sounds like there is a big range of possible in terms of hills.

“It works best with a hill,” the city’s community events manager, Mary Pinak, said this month.

“Downhill” is a relative term. In Salt Lake City this past summer, the slide dropped 145 feet in elevation over its length. In West Palm Beach, it will drop 20½ feet, downright dizzying by Florida standards.

But hardly very exciting. How about Meadowlands Drive, between Eagle Lane and Beaver Ridge. (Beaver Ridge could be used as a bypass for local traffic.) There is a decent descent and it is a local street so it wouldn't affect much traffic. Also, there is Inverness Park to gather in.

Not very practical:
1) Would interfere with construction
2) Very dirty down there obviously
3) Very hot down there. In the summer it would be well into the +40s

Main Street, Gatineau! That has death written all over it.

In Ottawa, ideally somewhere central...

Churchill? Off the Alexandria Bridge on the Gatineau side? Wellington/Rideau between Elgin and Sussex? Off the Laurier Bridge in front of Confederation Park?

Laurier would work, but maybe not enough of a slope?

Ottawa is too flat!

There's a good sized hill on Orleans Blvd. that is used (or has been used) for a Soap Box Derby. It's straight as an arrow with a pretty decent decline down the escarpment.

Edit: Also, there are no homes or businesses directly fronting the road, so it wouldn't be a big deal to close it off for a day.

Speaking of Corkstown Road, there's something I've always been curious about. What is its congestion levels like? Are there people who use it as a bypass for the highway when its busy?

More on topic, I think the whole point of this is that it should be in an urban environment, so I would disqualify the Kanata Hill or Orleans Boulevard. Putting it in on a suburban street is fine as long as said suburban street actually has stuff on it and isn't one of those streets with only the backs of buildings facing it.

I drive by it every day (albeit in the opposite direction) and really don't notice much activity on it... especially now that the 417 is 3.01 lanes wide going up the Kanata hill.

Even before/during the 417 expansion, when the hill was fully congested during afternoon rush hour, I rarely noticed more than a trickle of traffic... and certainly nothing approaching congestion on Corkstown.

Most of Corkstown is never busy, but occasionally it does get busy in the morning when you reach the end of the road at the March intersection, especially when the 417 westbound is congested for whatever reason.

Their website has Ottawa scheduled for sometime in Nov 2015. Really? If it's not in the heat of July or August, I doubt it's gonna happen.

Tenth Line and Trim are also good hills. At least in the built-up part of Ottawa, Orleans seems to have the best hilly roads.
