The socialist government tried - in Skopje, Sarajevo, and elsewhere - to replace the Ottoman-era architecture with commieblocks. Luckily, public backlash put a stop to it. But the earthquake in Skopje gave them the opening they needed to try their cheap, brutalist experiment in social engineering.
