"When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."
— Samuel Johnson, 1777
Yes that is a well used quote, it is fitting for a city of London's statue that a quote more than 200 years old is as appropriate today as it was then.
Many might be bored of London threads, and indeed have had enough London due to the Olympics. But what better time to start what could be a never ending series of London threads (due to the fact I will probably live here most of my life).....
London oozes life and energy. It is a vast and organic metropolis of people and ideas, of cultures from every corner of the globe. With more than 300 languages spoken in London, it is one of the only two (for my money) genuine global cities. When you are here you feel that you are at the centre of the universe, that everything that could possibly happen is going on under your nose. I don't want to be another arrogant Londoner, and I accept other opinions....this is just a thread dedicated to the city I love. That said, nobody could argue with London's status as a centre for finance, culture, sports, fashion, politics and trade.
Having spent 4 years living in Japan, I was initially reluctant to come home... ever.... Now I am back I realise there is no place I would rather be stuck in for one time. I like to move, I like to travel. But if I cant do that, then London is the next best thing.....you can travel across the world to any place you want without having to leave the city!
For me London truly stands tall with class and pride. You can find what you are looking for here, as it is too vast and organic to be one thing only at any one time. London is ugly, it is beautiful. It is rich, it is poor. It is old it is new. London can be as grand as Paris, as cultured as Florence, as gritty as New York, as cutting edge as Tokyo, as hectic as Mumbai, as dirty as Jakarta, as sprawling as Los Angeles.
This is my impression of the city I love the most.....
Needless to say, I am not yet tired of life......
