I had no idea how big Austin's fashion scene was till I moved here to San Francisco. I knew there was a fashion scene just didn't know that it would actually be bigger than San Francisco's, or so I was told.

A fashion student from the Art School I was going to said the fashion scene in Austin was much bigger than San Francisco's and is apparently pretty popular in the fashion industry. I didn't bother to look much into it so I still question that a bit, but now that you're saying this, it reminds me of what she'd told me. I think the fashion scene is more popular with independent fashion designers more than anything. Perhaps with F1 and SXSW, Austin's fashion scene will also gain more recognition internationally.

The fashion scenes in Austin & San Francisco are incredibly similar, which is why only one of them can oust for the lead in that select category of fashion and according to both your friend, most hipsters, & the global language monitor (that does their yearly analysis for all global fashion centers) that place happens to be Austin. Not San Francisco.

Here it is again: http://www.languagemonitor.com/fashi...shion-capital/

Both cities made their debut just last year. I expect Dallas to soar passed Chicago and Miami this year (or next couple of years) and Austin to so remain ahead of Atlanta & San Francisco. Houston will make its debut in the next few years, they've been really gearing up their fashion scene a lot lately.

Fashion is a HUGE global industry. Ask the designers in Milan, Paris, & New York. It's almost religious in those places.

that's a crazy list for austin to make considering all those other cities. but that list has san francisco ahead of austin. i'm surprised either way that austin is even in the mix. it just never occurred to me, not until recently. and i also assumed san francisco would have already been a much more established city in the fashion scene... especially over miami. whodathunk.

Lol, that is and what I will likely always think of when I think of fashion in Miami. But seriously Miami is huge. And such a kick ass party town. Like for the real parties, not the silly Panama Beach kinda parties.

But ya, like you said learning about Austin's fashion in San Fran, I kinda had the same in London. But that is more probably because it has only been in the past two years I have been spending so much of my time in London. Before 2010 I don't think Austin was much of a fashion town at all. I mean other than Eeyore's Birthday parties of course. =) So the two just happened to coincide.

And on the topic of F1 and Austin's Fashion, COTA is sponsoring Austin's Fashion Week in mid August. http://fashionweekaustin.com/

haha well, don't get me wrong. i never doubted miami's fashion scene, i just didn't think that san francisco's was that bad. i'd of at least thought it be up there with miami or something.

about the whole fashion in Austin i really wish there was a school here that was good for fashion and marketing. but sadly i don't think there will ever be a good school in the area for that. I would love to stay in the city but my options are either in New York or l.a blah blah blah

Do you think school is really necessary for fashion? I've always thought it was something that you could learn on your own time with practice just like any other medium, music and film included. Why not do it like some of my friends are doing it and just opening up their own stores designing clothes they've designed on their own? Austin is much more welcoming than NYC or LA if you went that route. It's less competitive and Austin praises that entrepreneur spirit like no other city.

Stuff like this happening for the city often now: http://www.languagemonitor.com/fashi...shion-capital/

Seriously are we really ranking fashion centers based on the tracking of buzz-words? This is a %$#^ BS list. I am no fashion expert but I know BS when I hear it. Any real list would consider the number of designers, models, fashion shows, design schools, retail and or wholesale activity? Any real list would also mention DC, Boston, Houston, and a host of other US cities before cough ..........!

But back to the "fashion topic" I do see however Austin beating out Houston from what I've seen having lived in both cities for awhile. I don't, however, know what makes certain cities better than others or what standards they use to rule it a top city in the fashion industry. I do know that Austin does have a large number of local designers and the city promotes them locally so it makes sense why Austin wouldn't be overlooked.

The list is BS and that is all there is to it. This has nothing to do with San Antonio. I have a right to express my opinion as do you. I really do not see you commenting when San Antonio is mentioned in a negative light in the Austin forum nor is there any moderator censure. In fact, no one says a word; a problem only arises when someone responds. So, if you want to believe Austin is some global fashion mecca based on someone mentioning a keyword on twitter or facebook go right ahead. My opinion is Austin is light years behind Atlanta and several U.S. cities, like Houston, not on this list.

there are schools for everything these days and really people go to art schools to make connections with other people in that field. FIDM in L.A has notable mentors as does parson in New York City something a Texas city doesn't have in this particular area. American fashion loves new blood its really Europe that's cut throat which is why New York prides itself in being so international with their own fashion market. and yeah i could learn how to sew and start a little shop here in town but to be honest I don't want to be just a little shop thats known by locals I want to create art its funny how i get inspired by architecture i cant begin to tell you how many designs I've thought up because of the Frost Bank tower

Yes you have the right to express your opinion but if you dont really know the subject should you really be commenting on it.
I myself am a fashion buff and i can tell you now Austin would be a fashion city long before Houston would ever be considered
Austins love for art and music creates a perfect atmosphere for it. where there's music fashions not far behind. the other cities just dont have that yet or never will
also i categorized fashion in cities in two ways product and consumer cities
the only product cities in the united states are New York City, Los Angeles, San Fran, and Las Vegas everywhere else is what i call consumer which dont really matter. Austin has a long way to go to jump to product but the potential is here if it happens it happens no big deal thats th austin attitude

While the topic is about Austin and Global Fashion Meccas…I too am surprised that Austin showed up on the list. However after 20 years in Austin I keep being amazed at how this town has exploded into a city and where it is headed. We all have our stories about Austin from years ago…like when I first moved here in 1992 I could drive I35 or MoPac at rush hour at the speed limit. WoW, how things have changed.

I travel through ABIA a lot and I have commented to friends about how people dress differently, more upscale than when Mueller was the airport. I park at one of the remote parking lots and take their shuttle to the terminal. The locals on these shuttles, even the ones flying to Cancun for vacation, are usually dressed in…well more than the old Birkenstocks attire. The women especially look like they are from a Big City, very well dressed. The men too have flair, especially the ones in shorts! Local Austinite’s, (750,000 metro population in 1992 vs. 1,800,000 today) have acquired a flair from the new locals who have moved in from elsewhere, while keeping the style relaxed but updated.

I strongly feel that Austin has changed/assimilated our newcomers as much or more than they have changed Austin. I live in Allendale, north-central Austin, and I feel that for the huge growth we have experienced…Austin still feels like Austin…just an updated Austin. To be catapulted into a list of Global Fashion Meccas is astounding. Even if it is a bit of hype, it is truly jaw-dropping to read. We have SXSW with movies, interactive and music. We have a foodie revolution going on, and the downtown area ready to explode again with new buildings. We have a great airport and a strong economy. And soon we will have F1 and other types of motor sports. This ain’t yer ol Austin anymore.

Global Fashion Mecca…OK, I will consider this one as well. Now if we could just get a METRO wide rail/transportation plan we will be able to handle much of this growth and direct it toward transportation nodes. But that is on another thread.

Don't know anything about fashion but looks like F1 is adding to the scene.......I guess it's not all about racing and fast cars.......Just more exposure ATX will be getting globally.

You cannot honestly believe this nonsense. Every major city in Texas has a fashion week. By just looking at the Houston link you can see the Austin show is not more important than Houston.

I've deleted the city vs city posts. I also moved the fashion discussion posts here from the Austin Projects & Construction thread.
