A Vancouver bike ride: Then (1974-ish) and Now (2011)

Super cool!

Someone rode around East Van, Second Narrows, North Van, Lions Gate, Stanley Park, and False Creek with an 8mm camera mounted to the front of his bicycle in the mid-70's and captured everything in time intervals. He digitized it, added 70's radio clips he found online, and went back and took pictures of the ride last year at key points along the ride. It was on Global last night with Squire and Randine apparently. Check it out!

That was cool. Esplanade was a ghost town. I've lived on the north shore since 1988 and didn't have any memory of pre-condoized Lower Lonsdale, and now I know why - nothing was there.

Kinda wished they went down 3rd instead of Lonsdale, might've seen my building under construction.

Also was a bummer they didn't go down Georgia. Though I guess the west end was the new happenin' end of town in the 70s.

The changes to the Seawall and the area around Granville Island are quite stunning.

It's amazing how much this city has changed, however it's also cool to see some parts did not change at all. East van pretty much looks the same and I think that alley shown at the end is still unpaved.

Fascinating. South False Creek was just a big pile of dirt with random duplexes going up.

Very cool. The old shots of North Van really brought back some memories.

I was blown away at 1. how little of the seawall has actually changed... when did they build that thing? I was sure they would have to do some rebuilds or something... and 2. how BARE False Creek was back then. they were just starting construction on a couple of homes out there - wonder if those specific homes are still around...

yes I thought it was a worthwhile share. I really like "then and now's"

Neat to see all those perspectives... Granville Island, SEFC, and Marine Dr in North Van had some of the most striking changes.

Wow, this is very cool, especially the then and now thing, which is right up my alley.
I can't imagine walking across the 2nd Narrows and Lion's Gate without those barriers, yeesh!
The Beetle count was pretty cool, and the vans were pretty popular back in the day too.
And they still have that speed trap sometimes on Terminal
