BEIJING unfiltered

Beijing needs no introduction. These were taken over a few chilly days in November.

Magnificent pictures!

Thank you very much for sharing your wonderful pictures from Beijing, a beautiful city full of life, like you show in your pics. Its environment is unique!

When I visited Beijing, I liked it very much. It´s a great and amazing metropolis.

Congratulations and greetings from Madrid, Spain!

God I miss Beijing. Its not an easy place to fall in love with, but once one does, it is impossible to forget.

Great thread. Captured Beijingers in all of their glory.

Awesome photos. There was not one bad photo, every single one was chalk full of awesomeness. The one of the white dude with the MacBook stood out though, probably just because it was the only Westerner I saw in the entire thread.

a most splendid performance, trout. some really excellent pictures in this set. cotton candy girl and the multi-colored fence are working, but i like the ones with the natural settings best. lots and lots of bikes, too.

A comprehensive set. You give a better idea of what Beijing is like than any guidebook. Great photos.

Interesting comparison. I've actually heard it used before.

Beijing is a unique city. There's no doubt about it. Come spring, I'm going to give it another chance.

Wonderful street-level photos of ordinary people and everyday life!

I'm always attuned to bikes in photos from other places, and I spotted several like this:

Roller lever (rod-operated brakes) and a full chaincase, typical of English Roadster bikes from the 1930s through the 1970s, and still manufactured in India and probably in China. They probably have the metric equivalent of 28-inch wheels, too. This one has a single-speed hub, though, whereas the English Roadsters typically came with Sturmey-Archer 3-speeds. The bikes weigh in at about 35 pounds but roll surprisingly easily, and the low frame angles provide stable handling and a comfortable ride even on rough streets.

I miss Beijing so much, its also changed so much since I lived there in 2007. Perhaps you could fill me on how the city has been preserving its Hutongs. Have they continued the destruction of them or have they started to preserve them? Great photos too by the way, it almost felt like I was back in that most amazing city.

Good shots of the Chinese capitol up north. I really need to find time to get up there.

I know the stereotype is that Beijing has horrible air pollution, but it looks surprisingly clear on these photos. Love the compilation.
