Mt Lassen / Susanville, CA
After my sister changed her mind last minute not to go out of state for college, and no longer need my help to move, I decided to use my week to take an impromptu road trip up through Northern California. I traveled over 900 miles over the course of 3.5 days and got to see a good slice of the middle part of our state. I hope you enjoy.
Winters/Willows - Red Bluff - Redding - Weaverville - Mt Shasta/Weed/Yreka
Day Three of my trip and I am saying goodbye to Mt. Shasta...
...and saying hello to Mt. Lassen...
Unfortunately, I did not have time to drive up to Mt Lassen which I'm told is an incredible drive. I just had to admire from afar.
Heading down into Susanville
Susanville, CA (pop 17,974)
Susanville, the seat of Lassen County, is located at a elevation of 4,186ft on the northeastern edge of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It is a former mining and logging town and now is home to the High Desert State Prison and the California Correctional Center. Having grown up in a small town in the foothills, lived in the suburbs of Sacramento and experienced city life in San Francisco, I don't often feel that "out of place" in the diverse cities in California. That is until I got to Susanville. The place (and the people) gave off a friendly, yet, curt vibe that made me feel like I didn't belong there. The same movies I watch were advertised at the theatre and the same songs coming out of the car radios play in my car, but, I can't explain it, these weren't the same people as me.
The Lassen County Courthouse, one of my favorite on my trip. Not moments before this photo, three prisoners were marched through the front doors in custody.
Susan...our city's namesake
Ironically city hall kind of looks like a prison
On my way out of Lassen County heading towards my next destination, I came across this little oddity near Westwood, CA
A little rural California nearby
I like cows...they don't complain when you take their photos
