Pittsburgh Part 1: The City

Pittsburgh is a great city. Probably my favorite non "Big Six" city in the US. It's got great dense vintage neighborhoods and a totally beautiful natural setting.

Fiance and I went there last weekend for no particular reason, so here are my pictures. This is Part 1. Part 2 will focus on transportation, and will come later. For all the pictures (including a lot that aren't posted here) go to flickr.

We'll start downtown.

Market Square was recently redesigned. It's a lot better now. The streets don't cut through.

This is from the tip of the peninsula, where the three rivers come together.

I love the painted steel bridges.

Anybody know what the red and white flag is? Maybe the county?

I laughed at this:

Two famous skyscrapers.

The esplanade along the Allegheny River is my favorite feature downtown. I can imagine it lined with shops and cafes.

Leaving downtown, into Lawrenceville. Fiance wanted to check out some shops in this neighborhood she had heard of.

Love the bowling alley.

Into Shadyside, which has always seemed weird to me. It's so less beautiful than so many other Pittsburgh neighborhoods, and yet it's the one that has picked up the high-end shopping.

We had dinner at a burger joint in East Liberty. Too bad this old market is just a random office building now.

Up early the next day and into Oakland, Pittsburgh's "midtown".

The U-Pitt chapel.

And now, the Cathedral of Learning, the University of Pittsburgh's main building. You'd have to have brain damage not to love this building.

The Cathedral has a series of classrooms in the interior design styles of various historic countries. I won't post them all, but here are a couple.

Of course we made the obligatory trip up Mount Washington. It was raining.

After that, across both rivers to the Northshore neighborhoods, specifically Mexican War Streets.

I think it's neat that they print the name of the neighborhood on the street signs.

Alley house FTW.

I can't help but think of a witch's hat when I see this.

Right next door, Deutschtown.

1) Primanti's blows.

2) What the hell are they doing to One Mellon?

3) An Apple Store next to a Rite-Aid? Is this what we do now?

4) Yay!

I never realized that Pittsburgh had such great architecture. Those shots remind me of the last time I was in Baltimore.

Great thread

Nice pictures. I like how you included some detail here and there, and the interior pictures of the Cathdral of Learning offer a nice view that doesn't get shown very often on here.

I agree with you, I like how neighborhoods are on street signs. Ontario cities tend to do this extensively, and I'd like to see it in Delaware. Wilmington could use it to preserve some neighborhood history that is slowly but surely disappearing.

The red and white flag that you asked for in one of your pictures is the flag of Castilla y Leon in Spain.
I don't know if any city or county in the usa would have that flag too, but originally is the flag of a region in the center on Spain.

Pittsburgh is one my all-time favorite cities. It is a visual treasure chest. Thanks for showing the interior of the Cathedral of Learning. I have never seen the inside before.

Nice tour of Gotham City. You have a nice eye for interesting architectural details... such as gargoyles.

this is the Allegheny Co. flag, btw

The Mellon tower (BNY Mellon Tower) is being painted; From it's original light tan to a gold color. I think the greenish color is a primer if I'm not mistaken. And then at the top they are adding their company logo which is this apparently:

Great pics BTW. Looks like you were there on a weekend though. Downtown looks dead.
