The St. Louis Craft Beer Boom

As much as the micro and craft beer trend has been ballyhooed and turf staked out, St. Louis is determined to be a part of this trend. In the second half of 2010, three new brewing concerns have announced plans to renovate urban spaces and begin production, joining the ranks of Schlafly, Buffalo, O'Fallon, and around a dozen others in the region. Perennial is the most recent -

Perennial will focus on American- and Belgian-influenced craft beers, and Wymore says he plans to use local, seasonal and organic ingredients such as fruits and herbs in ways that may "defy traditional categories."

Before moving to St. Louis this year, Wymore spent the past four years in Chicago, where he studied brewing at the Siebel Institute, oversaw the barrel-aging program at Goose Island Brewery, then worked as head brewer at Half Acre Beer Co.

Perennial will be located in the Temtor Building, named for the fruit-preserves company that occupied the structure before Coke. The historic site is undergoing a $27 million, mixed-use redevelopment project that will include about 75 loft apartments.

I saw O'Fallon beer at "The Map Room" in Chicago. I guess that's not saying much yet, since the Map Room has beer from pretty much everywhere. Then again they don't have Stag Beer :/ .

I remember when I wouldn't give O'Fallon the time of day, and they were lucky to have room temp shelf space across from the schnucks cooler. I do miss the heavy cardboard boxes that sixpacks used to come in, but that's pretty excessive packaging. I think it's good that St. Louis has a decent craft brewery hellbent on expansion, and a lot of others that aren't. Hopefully someday O'Fallon moves their production into the northside.

A friend is reopening the Mattingly brew pub on Jefferson. He is talking to different brewers about their thoughts. He should be open in a couple of weeks with craft beers to follow.

Awesome! In my opinion, I would transition to an authentic ( at least one offering 3.0%-4.0% ABV) english ale and session bitters focus, to differentiate himself from the growing crowd. There aren't too many of these places in the midwest, yet. Malty is the new hoppy. Schlafly comes tantalizingly close with it's Pale Ale, but not all the way. Revolution Brewing Co in Logan Square has more along the lines of what I'm talking about.

He would draw in all of the British expats from the entire region as well - nothing helps the cool factor like British accents.

The name will be Parma Grill. I believe he wants a slight soccer feel to the space. I'll forward to him these and any other suggestions. Thanks,
