Museum of Anthropology Finally Gets Reflecting Pool

Nice to see the last part of Erickson and Oberlander's design for the Museum finally put in place. I guess concerns about the weight of the pool on the cliffs were finally resolved. Maybe a forumer can get a picture this weekend.

After 34 years, Arthur Erickson’s original vision for the Museum of Anthropology has finally been realized.

A large “reflecting pool” was filled last Thursday on the museum’s grounds just outside the sweeping glass walls of the Great Hall, creating a feeling of seamlessness between indoors and outdoors and fulfilling the renowned late architect’s long-held dream..

Saw the pic in the paper - I wonder how they addressed the weight / erosion problem.

I look forward to seeing the reflecting pool the next time I am out at the MOA. One of the many reasons that I support rapid transit to UBC is that it will make the MOA much more accessible to locals and visitors alike. Frankly my dream scenario is for UBC to build a streetcar loop that connects the University Town development with the heart of the school, the bus loop/rapid transit station, and the Chan Centre/MOA. It's a pipe dream, I know, but I still like the idea.

The "reflecting pool" looks a lot more like a pond loll.

And I have to say that I'm still concerned about erosion. In the 1950s, they piled a huge stack of snow near where the SUB is today. When it started to melt, a stream formed and it flowed towards and off the cliffs. Later that winter, a massive section of the cliff collapsed and it formed a mini-canyon.

And I would be quite against improving in-campus transit. As it is, most students get their needed exercise by all the walking they do.

The UBC campus is huge, at least 25 minutes' walk from MoA to Triumf. It is not feasible to ask every visitor to walk the whole breadth of the campus. Ideally, the campus would have two SkyTrain stations (one north of University Blvd, and another south of Thunderbird Blvd).

Students would still walk if it costed money to ride.
