Parking woes

Parking meters in the downtowns:
http://www.thespec.com/news/business...-meter-madness
Big article in the Spec this week-end.

I go a couple times a week to downtown Stoney creek and the parking meter issue is a hot topic. That rear lot is always full ALWAYS.....

So I thought about it and wondered where all the parking went? There is a fair size lot directly behind the Legion (Main entrance).
No matter what time I go to that lot (business hours) it's full WHY??????
And who's at fault.
Well the businesses complain about metered paid parking and how it affects the amount of customers.
Well that FREE parking lot is mostly full of one passenger workers from the area. Or residents of the seniors home. Staff drive to work but heaven forbid pay for parking. Staff have a nasty habit (because they arrive first) to take the closest spaces.
I just thought of this, one business has several spots behind their shop reserved for JUST customers. Smart the way to do it but to go one step further where do their staff park? Ohhhhhhhh in the free municipal lot all day....
So they put in meters and you sound the alarm that our customers are not getting free parking. That medical centre or RBC bldg has alot of employees as to the local shops. So carpool, get dropped off, use a bus ride your bike. If you live close walk, but leave the parking spaces for the paying public and business will come. People say parking is an issue and that is why they are losing business to Queenston malls or Eastgate. Yeah, so make parking spaces. Put a strictly enforced 2 hr limit on that free municipal lot.
The lot is like 50 metres from the street.
I mention Stoney Creek but Locke or any of them are just as bad for employees or staff taking parking close to a business. Heck it's human nature but don't whine about parking as Hamilton is quite cheap. I pay $12 a day or more ($25+) for my hotel in Toronto or Montreal.
Business's should look closely at their parking lots and see who is there, My bank has designated spots and the local apartments take them up.
Someone has to plow and pave the lots and streets and it is a luxury not a right.
Hint hint, if a business has no parking when I drive I go someplace that does!!!!! So fine and police your own lots. I just bet that if parking was free on the streets you would have people who would use it for the whole day, because it is close to the front door and FREE..... Me me me world.

I think this is the key. One of the reasons to have paid parking is that you adjust the prices to keep the ideal 80% (or whatever it is) occupancy rate and 20% vacancy rate of parking, so customers DO have somewhere to park.. otherwise they won't.
