St. David’s South Austin Hospital will undergo a $72 million renovation and expansion, with work to start in April.
It will be the second expansion in five years for the 252-bed hospital, at 901 W. Ben White Blvd. A 2005 expansion added 34 beds, a cardiovascular center and other features.
The hospital will be renamed St. David’s South Austin Medical Center, effective immediately.

St. David’s South Austin Hospital today announced a $72-million capital investment for a renovation and expansion project to begin in April 2010. The expansion will increase the hospital by three floors, more than 100,000 square feet and 25 percent more beds.
Looks like they're building up, and not out. I might have to fake an injury to get to those upper levels after they're done, because there's going to be some great views of the skyline.
Interesting. Yeah, this is the 2nd expansion since that 5-story patient "tower" was added. In the image above it's the curved tower on the right side. By the way, the article says 2005 was the year they added that new section, but I'm thinking it was actually 2003.
The article mentions the expansion will add 3 floors. It looks like they're adding the new floors to an existing section in the middle. That existing section is 4 floors, so the new structure will be 7 floors tall. As for the height, I'm guessing it might be up to 90 feet tall. The only height I have for the 5-story patient tower says it's 59 feet tall, and that new section seems to be 30 feet taller than that.
By the way, that's the tallest parking garage in South Austin to the left. It's 8 floors.
I live less than 2 miles from the hospital. We actually have views of it around our neighborhood. I'm just hoping the tower doesn't block our views of downtown too much. The 5-story tower already blocks most of One Congress Plaza in one view.

As for great views, there definitely are. There's a killer view of 360 and Dobie Center from James Casey Road which runs alongside the hospital. If you do go there for views, definitely check out the parking garage. I think it was either LoneStarMike or Mopacs that made a trip up there a few years ago and took some pics. I've never been up there, and I'm not sure how good the view is. There's actually a good sized hill on the other side of Ben White that partially blocks the view.
EDIT: They're also expanding the parking garage. I'm not sure if they're planning on going up with it or adding another one?
Quote:
The new expansion project is scheduled to break ground in April 2010, with an estimated completion date of April 2012.
Architectural plans and interior design for the tower will be led by Nashville-based Gould Turner Group, Inc. The garage expansion will be led by Nashville-based Earl Swensson Associates, Inc. The general contractor has not yet been named.
Here's a view from my neighborhood. You can see the 5-story patient tower sticking up there. So the new tower will probably block a good bit of Frost here.

It looks taller than 30 feet taller to me, and that would only be 10 feet per floor, which seems unlikely.
I'm betting the new levels push the building in excess of 100'.
It could certainly be a mistake, but the St. David's website says the earlier expansion was completed in 2005 as well. Maybe it began, or was first announced in 2003?
"In 2005, St. David’s South Austin Hospital completed a $50-million expansion project that included 34 new medical surgical beds, a comprehensive cardiovascular center, an observation unit in the intensive care unit (ICU) and a 360-space parking garage. Additionally, the lobby registration area and physical therapy facilities were relocated to increase convenience for patients."
I just checked my source for the date, and it said that came from Austin Business Journal. So it is possible that was the announcement date. Still, it noted that construction lasted from 2002 to July of 2003.
Anyway, I've sent emails to St. David's and the architects of the new expansion asking for the heights.

It looks like they're starting work on the South Austin Hospital expansion. This will add 3 floors to the original building, for a total of 7. There's a large yellow crane up at the site now. I'm not sure if the crane is for the hospital tower itself, or the parking garage which was supposed to get two more levels. I'm excited about the garage getting two more floors. There's going to be some really nice views up there. That would make the garage 10 levels.
I'll have to go check out my neighborhood views tomorrow and snap a few pics, and maybe even go over to the hospital for a closer view.

We discussed earlier about adding floors to existing structures, I'm wondering if a) they planned for this in the original design, and b) will the existing floors be occupied during the construction of the 3 additional floors?
I noticed yesterday they were putting up the tower crane at the South Austin Hospital. It's about 150 feet tall. I can see it from my neighborhood. I went over today to take some pics. The crane is up.

Here's a little update on the St. David's South Austin Medical Center expansion. It's pretty tall. It's definitely a highrise. It's actually blocking most of the view of the Frost Bank Tower from my neighborhood. I think it's 8 floors tall now. They also added 2 levels to the parking garage. I haven't checked it out yet, but the views from it should be really good. I'm pretty sure it's the tallest parking garage south of the river.

The view of it from my neighborhood. It's just about blocked the view of downtown.
You can see what I believe is the elevator shaft here.

I found a height for the building from their Vice President Corporate Services. He says the building is 128 feet tall to the top of the barrel vaulted roof. So that officially makes it a high rise. And from what I can think of, that should make it the 3rd tallest hospital in the city.
Earlier I had said I thought the crane was around 150 feet, but I'm thinking it's more like 200 feet or a little more maybe.
