The Hamilton Mosque on Stonechurch Road East was firebombed early today.
Police said a rock was thrown through a front window of the mosque sometime after midnight and a bottle with a flammable substance was either thrown or placed inside the window and took fire.
The Hamilton police hate crime and arson investigators have been called in as well as uniform officers and will be reviewing surveillance video from other buildings in the area.
No estimate of damage was available.
The blaze burned itself out without doing serious damage.
It was discovered when staff arrived at 8 a.m.
The blaze, located inside the office of the principal of the mosque school, did little damage but greatly concerns police, said Sergeant Terri-Lynne Collings.
“From what investigators have been able to determine an unknown suspect or suspects threw a rock through the front window at the mosque,” said Collings.
“A bottle with some kind of flammable material was thrown inside and there was a small fire with minor damage which extinguished itself,”
The fire department was not called about the blaze because the damage was not discovered until the office was opened, she said.
“The mosque called us and we are taking this very seriously because this is a place of worship.
“Because of that we have not only patrol officers investigating but we have also advised out hate crime officer because it is a place of worship."
