Downtown Saint Petersburg, FL - now with cycle track

See this thread about Orlando for explanation.

I didn't have a tripod and it was night, so you'll have to forgive the fuzziness.

Downtown Saint Petersburg

This is taken from the end of the pier, which jutts out quite a distance into Tampa Bay.

This is the pier. The purple building at the end is actually an inverted pyramid.

As promised, Saint Petersburg contains a cycle track - a physically separated bike lane placed between the sidewalk and the parking lane. I know of only a couple cities in the US with these. They're absolutely fabulous, but very rare. I was shocked to find one in Florida.

BONUS
Downtown Tampa, approximately 15 miles away, on the other side of the bay.

I see that the Pinellas Trail goes all the way downtown now. You could bike to Tarpon Springs now from the bayfront.

Downtown St. Pete has a lot of potential. It's always been one of my favorites in Florida.

Did you happen to visit the Salvador Dali Museum? Yep, it's in St. Petersburg.

^^ One of the greatest museums I've ever been to. Some day I will make it to the other Dali museum in Girona, Spain.
Cirrus, thanks for yet another Florida thread!

So cool! They have those throughout China. I've been saying for years that the U.S. should adapt something like that.

Finally! First time I've heard/seen ANY anywhere in the States! Hope they catch on!

I've not seen much of St Petersburg, so, thanks for sharing. I too love that separated bicycle route.

I think downtown St. Petersburg has become the most well rounded 'big' downtown in Florida.

They also exist in New York, Washington DC, Portland, and Boulder CO.

As far as I know, that's it.

Indy has the cultural trail that travels along the streets throughout downtown.

Looks like that's more of an off-street sidewalk facility, which isn't quite the same thing.

Great to have, and in some ways even better than a cycle track. Just not quite the same thing.

Spent a week in downtown St. Pete this summer. Didn't love it, but it definitely exceeded expectations. Some nice restaurants too. Would've loved to go to the Salvadore Dali museum, but had to work during the day

How extensive is it in NYC, DC, and PDX?

I lived in two of those three cities - PDX and NYC...I don't recall them being there when I living in them (PDX, 1995-6) (NYC 1998-2000).

I'm even more interested in DC though, as that was the next city I was considering living in, whenever I go back home to the States.

They're new in all cases, and so far all those cities only have 1 or 2.

DC has a network of 5 or 6 planned. I'm not sure about the other cities.

Here are a couple of pictures:

9th Avenue in New York:

15th Street in DC:

13th Street in Boulder:

Broadway in Portland:

^^New york also has them on Kent ave, 1st ave, 2nd Ave, Forsyth st and some other street in Soho. Most don't have the concrete barrier as seen in St. Pete, rather, they depend on parked cars as a barrier from street traffic.

Never seen st. pete. before, looks great so far.
