Elmira, NY part 1; the Heights, the College, The prison

I decided to finally spend some time in Elmira and do a real tour. I've posted a few pics in the past, but never spent much time there. It's only a half hour from Ithaca, but I was not attracted to the place much in my younger years. Not that I find it an attractive city now, but I don't turn up my nose to the city as many Ithacans do.

For the first installment, I decided to include Elmira Heights, a small suburb of 4,000 just to the north of Elmira. I also included Elmira College and environs, and a couple of other pics. Anyway, here's some pics:

Elmira Heights, here's some info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmira_Heights,_New_York

1. An old fire station

"Downtown" Elmira Heights is split in two by railroad tracks. More stores on the south side of the tracks, but not much traffic on either side for a tuesday mid morning.

6. Thank goodness for the Sub Shop, I was starting to feel lonely.

Some residential

7.

9.

10. Putting some kind of shell around an older house.

11.

12. I've seen these many times, and thought there are out of place, and not attractive either.

13. Yep, seems like all towns in upstate have these senior boxes.

Elmira Correctional Facility, one of two state prisons in the area. It was the site of an infamous prison during the Civil War. Approximately 3,000 of the 12,000 Condeferate prisoners died there. Here's some other info for those interested: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmira_Correctional_Facility

14.

15. I knew a couple of guys who spent some time there (and no you smart asses, I'm talking about the 1960s, not the 1860s.)

Some residential while heading to the CBD

16.

17. Some decent looking low income housing (Hathorn Court) near the prison.

18. I think there's 275 units in Hathorn.

19.

20. Looks like a bit more facia work and it'll be done.

Just a few blocks from the main core of the city is Elmira College, a small (about 1,200 students) private Liberal Arts school. More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elmira_College

28. While there was some nice housing next to the school......

This is more typical.

Train tracks which bisect the city are two blocks from the dorms.

32.

Finally some shots from the south side of Elmira.
33.

34. Some elderly folks towers (of course)

35. This one caught my eye.

Hope you enjoyed. And Stand by for part 2.

Here's other stops on the trip:

Syracuse, NY

Watertown, NY

Oswego, NY

Oneida, NY

Utica, NY

Gloversville, NY

Elmira Part 2

Nice pictures. I was actually going to stop in Elmira myself and take some pictures, but never got a chance to. You did a good job, and I'm looking forward to Part 2 (Downtown and inner neighborhoods, I'm assuming?).

Looks like a pretty campus. I'm getting a little bit of a western/inland New England vibe from some of those wooden apartment buildings.
