Very cool. What are density restrictions like in Sao Paulo? I seem to recall reading somewhere that even the densest zoning districts are set at a Floor Area Ratio (built square footage divided by area of parcel) of 7.0 but can't find a source.

probably the same thing that caused so much european immigration to Brazil and USA and Argentina... mechanization of architecture, populational explosion of european and japanese cities, plenty of opportunities in the New World.

Japanese immigration was not seen with good eyes in Brazil back then (end of XIX century)... they were an "inferior" race... Brazil governants wanted to whitenize Brazil... at the same time that they tried to close doors to Africa and Asia immigration, the doors for european immigration remained wide open.

BUT, economics speak stronger, and our main export at that time was cofee, and we needed workforce... japanese immigrants supplied a lot of the workforce at that time...

its interesting to note that although Italy forbid italian immigration to Brazil due to poor work conditions (only in São Paulo, as employees in cofee plantations, since in the south of the country they settled their own colonies and farms), they also experienced VERY FAST social climb... in fact, while I dont deny that italian immigrants suffered abuses while farm and factory workers (which was quite common at that time, anywhere in the world), italians dominated São Paulo city economy in the beginning of the 20th century.


The equivalent of the Rockfellers, in São Paulo, were the MATARAZZO family. The first skyscraper in São Paulo? Edificio MARTINELLI. One of the tallest and most famous buildings in São Paulo? EDIFICIO ITALIA!

Palmeiras, one of the most popular soccer clubs in Brazil with 17 million supporters, was founded by 4 italians in São Paulo, with the name of Palestra Italia (name only changed in 2nd WW, along with many other italian and german things in Brazil)
