Saskatchewan's 6-Storey Pavilion Dome at the 2010 Games

I still remember the Saskatchewan pavilion at Expo '86 and, for a small prairie province, they stood out back then and I enjoyed their pavilion experience esp. the bison burgers!

It appears as if Saskatchewan is about to make another similar come-back for the 2010 Olympics.

Good on them!

Government Announces $3.6 million Project for Saskatchewan's Pavilion at 2010 Olympics

By Angela Hall, Leader-PostAugust 10, 2009 8:34 PM

REGINA — A six-storey high dome will help set the Saskatchewan Pavilion apart at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, the government said Monday as it announced details of the $3.6 million project.

The pavilion will consist of two structures — an entertainment venue showcasing local performers, artists and food, and a business and reception centre with an air-supported stratosphere, which will be able to display 360 degree images of Saskatchewan.

"This is going to be an amazing presence. We will be able to project images of Saskatchewan basically in the Vancouver skyline. People who are not just in the pavilion, (but) people who are walking around ... they're going to see Saskatchewan lighting up the Vancouver night," said Dustin Duncan, minister of tourism, parks, culture and sport, at a press conference that kicked off with a performance by local figure skaters at the Doug Wickenheiser Arena.

Don Clark, a University of Regina professor emeritus managing the planning and operation of the Saskatchewan Pavilion, said the province has a prime location on the shore of False Creek opposite the Olympic Village. General Motors Place, which will host hockey games, and BC Place, the site of medal ceremonies, are located nearby, as are two SkyTrain stops.

"We're working on food and beverage for the pavilion, and of course we're going to have Saskatchewan products — bison burgers and who can forget about saskatoon pie," Clark said.....

BTW, here's Saskatchewan's Expo '86 pavilion in retrospect:

^ i've gotta say, in both Summer and Winter Games history there has never, ever been an Olympic host city doing so much in terms of public events on top of the Olympic organizing committee's Cultural Olympiad and nightly medal ceremonies:

- TWO nightly medal ceremonies sites at both Whistler and Vancouver. Whistler with 8,000 seats and Vancouver/BC Place with 35,000 seats. Previous Winter Games host cities would be lucky to even have one nightly medals ceremony venue with 8,000 seats.

- we have a ton of Live Sites throughout the downtown core and Whistler Village, a lot more than any Summer and Winter Games host city before us....including two large Live Site concert parties able to accommodate tens of thousands at David Lam Park and the Beatty bus depot

- i believe VANOC has created a Winter Olympic first by introducing a Summer Games tradition into the Winter by having a Cultural Olympiad for 2010

- And we have a massive pavilion festivity site, able to accommodate tens of thousands, which is an Olympic first.

This is all great and incredible, if the weather cooperates.

There's so much to do that even the IOC was telling us a few months ago that "we might have too much". I could see it as a big security concern though, and it's bound to create quite a bit more traffic on top of sports events spectators.

I'm surprised CTV chose False Creek as their broadcasting location. It'll definitely have great shots of the stadium and the skyline.

^ yea, i thought so too. I'm guessing the False Creek location would be used for Olympic Prime Time (late-afternoon/evening coverage) with Brian Williams. False Creek would be nice, but only if it's not raining. But I would imagine that they'd still use their Burrard studios for some coverage.

I believe CTV's morning show Canada AM will be broadcasting from an outdoor studio at Robson Square.

NBC on the other hand is broadcasting from the panoramic platform of the new convention centre's plaza, and I believe Australia's Foxtel might be broadcasting from the peak of Grouse.

They said more LED Olympic rings like the ones at the airport will be installed....I wonder where and when. The Lions Gate Bridge is an obvious one, perhaps the Burrard Street Bridge too, and maybe even a massive one along the slopes of Grouse?
