It's the building that has Pizza Pizza and the Pagoda.

What was this building once upon a time?

the pagoda has been in there since 1942. the longest continually operating restaurant in hamilton.
the building was likely built in the mid 1800s

i think there was a Laura Secord candy shop in the Pizza Pizza space in the 50s

Interesting, the building next door to it is brand new, but we were trying to work out if 87 was old or new(ish). Does it have a name?

What's interesting is that the Pagoda's sign looks similar to the sign infront of the building in the 30s, which is before their time. I can't quite make out what the 30's sign says though. I think it starts with an S though. Perhaps SIL and has a K in there. Not sure. Very interesting!

Amazing how that intersection's heritage buildings are almost all there still. Pagoda, the building on the opposite corner, most (if not all) of the buildings on the West side of John N, same thing on the East side as well including Treble Hall. They're in various states of repair/disrepair, but at least they're all still there. The entire Erwin block might still exist if it weren't for the fire that destroyed that part in the 1990's (?) I remember a Tally Ho restaurant on the ground floor. Someone posted a picture of it a long time ago.

edit: just found it, LikeHamilton posted it in the 87-89 King E. development thread about a year ago.

That must have been the rest of the Erwin block. The windows and structure seem to match. Tally Ho, a record store and "Olympia" or something on the ground floor.

I love King Street around Gore Park. I am convinced it will improve again.

It's a shame the new building 89 seems unoccupied.

Unfortunately the retail units haven't been rented but I think that the residential units are all rented out now. I had heard a rumor from one of the people who work at Safin Grill that they will be re-locating to one of the retail spaces in the new building next door but this was about 6 months ago and I haven't heard or seen anything about it since. Makes sense though as their current spot is incredibly small and crowded and they'd probably be happy to have the extra space.

Hopefully something will move in to that slot. I know "International Village" starts at Wellington, where does it end? I love that stretch of King between James and Wellington, I see so much potential in it for improvement.

I personally consider it to be just King from Wellington to about Catherine or John. I suppose Main and King William are included because theres some international foods to be had. No clue whats on Main or King between Wellington and West though.

yah, i'm not really sure why it extends to West Ave. It's just one block, First Place, First Place park, that funeral home, Landmark Place would all be included in this scheme.

I don't recall whats on King William between Wellington and West. maybe something "international" ?

I'll look next time I'm there, but the only international things that might be there are myself and any other visiting peoples.
