My adventure in southern France included several towns. Avignon is famous for its papal legacy, and also the song about its bridge. I did a day trip here to check out the monuments left behind by the church.
1. From the railway station, you enter the city walls and head towards the river.
17. Avignon is generally quite well-kept. The streets were clean and there were a lot of tourists exploring around.
24. From a higher vantage point, Avignon is a fairly low-rise city.
40. A long morning of walking requires great sustenance.
46. Cathedrale Notre-Dame des Doms
51. Rocher des Doms is a nice park on a hill with a great vantage point of the river that runs around Avignon. Nice place to relax and see some greenery!
65. Now it's time to descend to find the famous bridge!
67. It's a bit hard to believe this serene-looking river can be so deadly at times, and was strong enough to destroy parts of the bridge.
80. Serene ...
85. The stone surface seems quite well-maintained. I wonder what the railings used to be. It didn't seem like an appropriate safety addition to this historic relic. Sur le pont d'Avignon ...
94. In the last part, I was up in that hill taking pictures of this bridge!
95. It was a nice walk. Now time to head across the river to see the bridge from a different angle! I had to skirt the city walls to make the crossing.
