False Creek to get Expo '86 pavilion deja-vu for 2010

Expo 86 deja vu for 2010

By BOB MACKIN, 24 HOURS

A corner of the old Expo 86 site may become Expo-like during the 2010 Winter Olympics.

Hockey Canada's Hockey House Live pavilion will be built near the Concord Pacific sales centre.

Concord Pacific vice-president of sales Grant Murray said provincial pavilions for Ontario, Quebec and Saskatchewan are expected to be neighbours.

Serda Evren of the Ontario tourism ministry's Olympic communications office said the Concord Pacific site is the only one being considered for a provincial pavilion.

A decision is anticipated in the next month.

"Other sites could pop up should our needs change," Evren said.

Janet Peters, communications director for Saskatchewan's tourism, parks, culture and sport ministry, would not comment during negotiations.

Nearby Science World is receiving $10.5 million in B.C. taxpayer-funded renovations and is talking with various parties, including broadcasters.

"It still continues to be our preference that we would be someone's home during that period, whether it be a sponsor, an organizing committee or an event," said Science World president and CEO Bryan Tisdall.

I think that would be cool to turn the Omnimax into a live Olympics Live streaming theatre.

Of course, I know the projector is Imax grade and this is likely impossible, but it would be cool.

I used to work at Science World, and I can tell you that the Telusphere name was dropped after a few months. Marketing figured out it might actually destroy the whole Science World brand and could actually hurt attendance.

So, they went with Science World at Telus World of Science. A good compromise.

And plus it's kinda an insult to Science World because it is so 'unique (for lack of a better term) because are there not other Telus World of Sciences elsewhere?

Anywho, are there going to be 10 provincial pavillions (and 3 for the territories)? And they'll be scatter throughout because the articles just mention the 3 provinces that will be neighbours.

^I believe those provinces contributed money to VANOC and getting a pavilion was part of the deal. So only those provinces and territories that contribute will be setting up pavilions.

Sounds great that those vacant NEFC lands will be put to some use. It'll now also make a bit of a continuous 'Olympic zone' wrapping around False Creek from the athlete's village to the stadium venues/party plazas etc.

Isn't the Roundhouse going to be either the "Canada Pavillion" of the "BC Pavillion"? Each province or country will set up wherever it wants to - Concord just seems to have a good site and is leveraging the "energy" that would be created by a multi-pavillion facility. The Netherlands is looking for a site near the Olympic Oval in Richmond.

The Russians Are Coming! … To Science World
Science World to be 'Sochi world' in 2010

Canwest News Service
March 27, 2009 10:35 AM

The Russians will take over Science World in Vancouver during the 2010 Olympics to promote their Games in Sochi in 2014.

Sochi 2014 CEO Dmitry Chernyshenko made that revelation Thursday at the Sportaccord convention in Denver.

He said Russian officials are planning a big program with Sochi Russia 2014 House, calling Science World a beautiful and "very well situated" building in front of the Olympic Village.

Russian representatives had considered other Vancouver venues — including pubs and restaurants — before choosing Science World as their base of hospitality operations during the 2010 Games.

It's a shame we couldn't find a better use for ourselves, for such a high profile venue.

Does that mean Science World will be closed during the Olympics?
Or are they just using the media/meeting rooms?

It'll be open to the public, but will act as a public pavilion that promotes Russia and Sochi 2014....like what we did successfully at Torino 2006 with the log house and unsuccesfully at Beijing 2008 with the museum.

So it may actually mean that parts of Science World will be open at no charge(?) - or will they do the Canada Beijing Pavillion mistake of charging for entry?

^ seems a bit odd that the Park board denied their request, I wonder why.

Even odder to have the House at the Bay.

Does anyone know when the main floor will be converted into the souvenier superstore?
