I thought you may be interested to know this building was originally a convent (nunnery) for an order I believe are known as The Sisters of the Precious Blood, who I heard made the little wafers for communion in the Catholic church. Probably close to twenty years ago they built a new convent on the grounds of the big St. Joseph's Convent property at Highway 6 and 403. That's the beautiful building with the tower on top next to the RBG grounds. How do I know this? I have a few aunts that are nuns with St. Joseph's. They still have (at least partial) ownership in the hospitals here and in Brantford, the villa in Dundas, and other places. They are actually a registered corporation.

Anyone who is old enough, I'm not myself, may remember the days when the nurses in that hospital were nuns.

Incidently my aunt once told me they were often approached by developers about their Highway 6/403 property, but won't sell.

the word "nunnery" always sounded strange to me.. Like a "cannery" only it's where women are "canned", locked-up so to speak.

That's true, but they have sold off a lot of other smaller properties around the city, and consolidated the order back at "The Motherhouse" as it is known. They were living in places that were even just houses. That property at King and Queen, (northwest corner) was their's for example. The Motherhouse is one beautiful property, inside and out. It was built I think in the 1930's. Dan McLean did a special about it years ago. So hopefully it stays in their hands, or the diocese in one form or another.

And they still make the communion wafers there. My company built one of the machines they use. We like to say we've built machines for everything from Birth Control Pills to Communion Wafers LOL.
