I know what you mean about people's impressions. A lot of the suburbs were built in former farmland and grasslands, thus people's impressions of relatively few trees, if that's all they see. But some of the metroplex was originally woodlands, especially the southern portion of the metroplex between Dallas and Fort Worth. It's a long way to any desert areas from DFW. The general landscape in the DFW area is similar to what you find from that area northward through much of the midwest. Precipitation is midwestern as well, not western.
Southwest Dallas County near Duncanville looks sort of like the hill country of central TX, and is hilly and wooded. Some parts of Fort Worth are quite hilly as well.
